Re: Why the Rottweiler is NOT for everyone

Thank you for all the kind words. This came out of nowhere today, but it appeared in my head and needed to be written. I hope it will help some in educating people on the true nature of the dog, based on over 100 years of breeding. Some things are hard-wired and not all hard-wiring fits in all homes.

THANK YOU Gretchen, for taking the time to put this together and then allowing us to share it with those who are (or need) learning about the breed!

I don't think it came out of nowhere, there have been a recent rash of posts lately that inspired it. It was needed.

Re: Why the Rottweiler is NOT for everyone

Misty was my first rottweiler. I got her from a hobby(a step or two above byb) breeder in 1995. She had a very correct temperament. Her bad elbows slowed her down some, but she was a dog that needed to work. I got a lot of flack for continuing to compete with her in obedience, trained her for utility when she had cancer. She needed her brain worked. She had a strong work ethic and energy.
Duncan was my second dog. He was a good looking dog, but he really, truely, isn't a rottweiler in many ways. He is independant, he is intelligant. He is a love. I don't regret ever owning him. He taught me a lot. But I would not want another one of him.
When I got Fizbin, I heard the whispers that I was going to be disappointed because he wasn't like Duncan. It would make me smile. I didn't want a dog like Duncan. I know that if I ever wanted to give him up, there will be a line wrapped around the block wanting to get him. But I wanted another dog like Misty. I wanted a rottweiler and all that means. I wanted a dog with biddability, work ethic, correct temperament, the energy and health to go the distance. I got that in Fizbin. It does look like I got the same with Cipher.
Great post Gretchen. I know of a few people that I will be sending it to. It really summarizes what a rottweiler is and what it takes to own one. My husband often asks what our expectations would if we got Fizbin first, vs Duncan. I tell him that we did get Fizbin first, her name was Misty. But if we had gotten Duncan first, we would not have been prepared for what followed, that is for sure. Misty is the reason why we continue to have rottweilers.

Re: Why the Rottweiler is NOT for everyone

Thank you, good reading... This is what I try to tell people every day that meet my dog at work, people often say: "I would really like to have a rottie cause they´r so BEAUTIFUL " ! Come on, what´s wrong with some people?! I will surely point out all these things you have written in this exellent "sticky" the next time someone tells me they want a rottie :) Love, Freyja in Iceland.

Re: Why the Rottweiler is NOT for everyone

To be honest, I don't think Rotties are the most attractive breed of dog. I like the look, just not my favorite. I love rotties for their tempermant and their potential. When a Rottie is raised and cared for by an EXPERIENCED dog person, I don't think you can get a better dog. On the flip side, I would hate to live next door to some doofus who has no business owning a Rottie.

Thank-you for this thread. As I tell many people on my DAILY walks, no I wouldn't recommend you get a rottie soon, since you are asking me, a complete stranger. But I know about this great form . . . . . . .

Excellent post, definitely a MUST-READ and a MUST-SHARE piece of work. This is the kind of reading that sets this discussion forum heads and shoulders above most others of its kind. Keep up the great work, BostonRott - may your tribe increase!

Re: Why the Rottweiler is NOT for everyone

Holy cow, where's the rhinestone tiara for our friend, Gret?

These are the kinds of things I stress when getting inquiries, or discussing my breed with strangers. Many times, people are not as honest with themselves as the dogs they desire.

A positively well thought out post. That's 2 for 2 in just as many days!

Re: Why the Rottweiler is NOT for everyone

Thank you Gretchen for such a poignant post!

I really should carry copies with me to hand out wherever I go! I can't tell you how many people tell me they want a dog "just like Joy because she does NOT need any training to be good."

I turn blue in the face trying to explain just how much training is needed to have a dog behave as Joy does in the public situations in which they see her!

Re: Why the Rottweiler is NOT for everyone

I vote STICKY as well!!! Thank you Gretchen for beautifully summarizing the grace and power of this breed. I'm happy to see that AKC numbers are dropping. That's always a good thing for a breed, imo.

Making the post a sticky would be great, making it required reading upon joining this forum would be better. It is so very, very true.

I second that notion. I still get goose bumps when I see a well built rottweiler!!

And thank you Gretchen for another wonderful, well thought out post. Your passion for this breed is remarkable.

Sticky, por favor!!!
