Re: Cant understand what im doing wrong!!

hi hi, I was thinking about the loose skin on my rotties neck, well he is 11 month old and is 52kg and very tall now. I know he is in the bigger sizes but he is not fat, I can feel his ribs and also I think he looks slim.... but I was wondering because he has so much loose skin on his neck, is he going to grow much bigger ? :) I have been told that he will grow up to it, but I just wonder how huge he will be if he will fill up his skin :/ Have I got a monster size dog then?? :) Love, Freyja and Susti.

Re: Loose Skin - More Growth?

Well lets hope you don't have a monster sized dog. A Rottweiler should not be Mastiff sized. And while he may fill out a bit over the next 2 years, he shouldn't get more than an inch taller if any at all. Even full grown dogs have some loose skin around the neck. Too much is undesirable, looks like a lot of folds under the chin, and referred to as "wet."

For his age, it sounds as if you're keeping him healthily trim. If you can feel his ribs and you can see a waistline from the top, you're doing good.

How tall is your boy???
52 kg (114 lbs.) is what BIG mature/adult males weigh.

Re: Loose Skin - More Growth?

I'm visualizing billowing ruffles of loose skin draping down the chest, like having a Sharpei puppy hanging like a bib

All my Rottweilers have had loose skin under their necks. I always thought it was nature's way of providing extra protection from attack. I'm not sure how big an attacker's mouth would have to be to get all that loose skin and down into vital structures. There's probably some other reason for it, but that's what I imagined.

Holy "Iceland Pony" ...73 cm (28.7 inches)... he is tall.

Yes... keep him lean... but you can't change his genetics.

Re: Loose Skin - More Growth?

73 cm, that kind of tall . He will probably not grow any taller if i would guess, maybe will lower 1 cm or 2. I know some Rotties over here that where about 71cm at 12 months and now is down to 69 cm at nearly 2 years.
Our boy is 10 months now and he has a lot of loose skin on his neck like your boy.

"Beste kvejdur" or something like that

Re: Loose Skin - More Growth?

Is there a chance he is not pure Rott and mixed with something? The only reason why I ask is, that would explain why he is so tall. Otherwise, just keep him healthy. Some people say it takes a full 2 years for there Rotts to fill out completely, some shorter , some longer. He may just be a big dog!

Re: Loose Skin - More Growth?

hi, no he´s not a mix, there are no mixed rotties here...yet! They are so new here in Iceland. I just hope he will lower like Gibbe said, just for his sake. It doesn´t relly bother me, it is just him I am worried about of fast growth. Susti comes from parents, dog Britan rottie inported from new zeland I think and his mom in also britt rott pure breed, but Susti´s GRANDFATHER :) was inported for breeding but whe arrived to Iceland..... just one testicle was found, so he is not leagaly a Breeding dog. But still they all are pure breds and just without a pedigree cause og TANKUR the one testicle rotttie. Sad. But all of us rottie owners here in Iceland know each other, thats funny :) Love, Freyja and susti. And Gibbe... Bestu kveðjur! :)

Re: Loose Skin - More Growth?

My guy who passed on was a big boy (way out of standard, byb bred, I adopted him from a shelter who knew the byb/owner he had a reputation in the area).

He did have lots of loose skin around his neck, at his full grown state his neck was 33" around. He was also tall like your guy (over 28") and at his perfect "lean" weight was 125. He never 'grew' into his neck, it was always loose-ish like a mastiffs.
