Hi, New to Rotti's!

hi, i'm looking to get my first rotti within the next few months and i'm just looking for thoughts and opinions. I have had a few dogs in the past (an Akita, ESS, peki/polm mix) I kind of lost my akita and ESS in a Breakup with an ex finacee and i want to get a dog again i miss having one. I've always had a huge respect for Rottweilers and would like to raise one. I'm moving to a large Duplex (2600sqft) in May (my parents own the other side so everything is good with the landlords lol) One of our neighbors has a Golden Retriever and the neighbor accross the street has two black labs and 3 small children so socialazation wouldn't be an issue.
exersice and play time wouldn't be an issue either as my mom doesnt work and would entertain the dog lol. I know this seems like a screening process or something lol but i like to kind of check with experts and people who have already raised dogs. Thanks Brian

Re: Hi, New to Rotti's!

I'm going to give you some advise you will hear many a time in this forum. Please take your time finding a reputable breeder, listen to those here who have alot of experiance with the breed ( i.e. not me ). I found a good breeder and have a great dog that I love to death, but if it wasn't for people in this forum I would have made a HUGE mistake ( thanks guys ).

Hang around and read, read, read and when you think your done read some more.

Re: Hi, New to Rotti's!

find a rottweiler club near you, speak to them, AKC as well. We are not allowed mentioning breeders by name other than Kimbertral. That is a STAY AWAY BYB. I am from canada can not help you more sorry. Have you thought about a rescue?

I have rescued a dog before and i wasn't very happy with the dog she was very difficult to train so i really dont want to go that route with a dog anymore.

Re: Hi, New to Rotti's!

I'm not sure where Groton, CT is in relationship to you, but I think there are some specialities (a Rottweiler one included) and all breed shows on the weeknd of the 18th and 19th. Going to shows and talking to the exhibitors is a great way of finding good breeders and learning who is who and getting referrals.

I have some friends going to those shows, I'll find out where and when they are.

Re: Hi, New to Rotti's!

Hello! Welcome to the forums. If memory serves right, Somers is up near the Mass. border in about the center of the state. (I was born and raised in CT. ) Groton should only be about an hour and a half drive. I'd take Sharon up on her advice.

Also, if you want to see what is going on in your area (shows, etc.) you can use this site http://www.infodog.com/ and do a search by state.

Good luck with your search.

AAAAKKKKKKKKKKKK!!!!! I just noticed where you're from. DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT get a puppy from a 52 year old, single white woman in Torrington, CT.

Re: Hi, New to Rotti's!

Be sure to read the Stickies in the following sections of the forum:

Breeding
Behavior
Puppy Development

You want to make sure that your breeder can supply you with AKC numbers and OFA numbers BEFORE you put a deposit on a puppy. You can check the numbers and be sure that what the breeder is telling you is true so far as health testing and registration before you make such an important decision. If you search here, it shouldn't take you long to come up with a long list of questions to ask a breeder. And the breeder should have a ton more questions to ask you!

I'm thinking they are using the wife now to sell dogs, for a while it was Yarnall Jr. & Sr., but maybe they are trying a new tactic-if you take a look at their website-its been done to look like they are breeding a new "crop" of Rotts, they bought a decent stud from Europe-but they are now breeding the crap out of him!
