| New Rotti I am very interested in getting a rottweiler puppy. I have never owned one before and I have been trying to do some research. It seems that there are certain breeds of dogs people seem to have an immediate fear of, of course I know that with proper training they can be very wonderful dogs. How can I be sure to train my rottweiler properly so it has no problems with aggression/visciousness/etc. |

| Re: New Rotti From personal experience, I won't go into, your very first step, (once you are sure you have the time, and money to invest in a dog) is to make sure you buy from a reputable breeder. Not some dog out of the newspaper, not a buddy who breeds (or thinks he can breed) and not some pet store/shop. GENETICS IS EVERYTHING. Take your time and find a breeder that is in it for the love of the breed, not the money. You must start out with a genetically sound puppy (temperament, mother and father even farther down the line)

| Re: New Rotti Second on above comment. Then begin to socialize your dog as a pup with all sorts of dogs (puppy kindegarten, meeting other dogs once vacinated in stores), people of every different size and shape and lots of variety as to what the dog experiences. Then on to obedience. After that...lots of areas where our dogs excel...and you can have great fun with them!!! Agility, herding, carting, therapy....just depends on the dogs attitude and your likes. Keep researching the forums. There's a lot of info here...and a lot of discussion as to dogs that have been "wired" wrong....sometimes due to poor breeding; sometimes due to improper early upbringing. And the amount of time you put into these dogs will be rewarded 100 fold!!! Good luck..thx for being responsible and getting information prior to selecting a rott. |
