White patch on Rottweiler's chest Hi, We have 2 new Rottweillers, But my question is being asked for my brother. He was looking at some puppies from a breeder this past weekend and he said that one of them had a patch of white on his chest. Can anyone gives us their thoughts or comments on this. Thanks much, Kozmo and Elroy's owner Jerry ------------------

The white patch on the chest is a disqualifying fault. So be careful. Now it all depends on what kind of dog you want. Just make shure that the breeder doesnt try to pull a fast one on you, about the white patch. Ive seen litters that only one pup had that characteristic. But if it is a reputable breeder they should tell you that is is a fault, and that, the pup would not be show quality. good Luck, trish

Thanks Trish, I will pass that info on to my brother. We'll have to see what he decides, I do know that he isn't buying his Rottie to be a show dog. Mainly for companionship. He asked me to post the question because the Rottie with the white patch was the friendliest of the bunch, and he was curious to hear your comments. Whichever one he chooses will be in "good hands" with lots of land for excercise and he has followed my choice of using Nutro's products. I'm just happy to be welcoming another Rottweiller to our family, which will now total 6 Rottweillers. (Mom and Dad have one, sister has 2, we have 2, and now brother will have one.) my Brother also stated that the "white patch" Rottie will be easy to identify when the rest of the "gang" are all here visiting. Now thats what I call some serious company! Jerry (Kozmo and Elroy)

In the book The Complete Dog Book (AKC) it says "a few white hairs do not constitute a marking." However a PINK MOUTH is a SERIOUS FAULT. In looking for a PET Rott I don't understand why a few white hairs bother so many people when they over~look the pink mouth or LITE eyes etc. If your brother is looking for a pet dog with a good temperment tell him to over~look the white patch. The dog can still be shown just not in comfermation. ------------------

I agree, Thanks for your reply, After I told my brother what Trish had said, He has made his mind up to buy the Rotti with the small white markings in the front. (He fell in love with that particular dog's personality) I'm sure a lot of the members are cringing, But NOT everyone buys there dog to show it in a competition... And the poor Rotti can't help it he has some white hairs on his chest haha! I wish him the best of luck!

Kozmo: No, not everyone is cringing because it sounds as tho the dog is being bought for what it will be--a buddy, companion, & family friend & member. I'd encourge your brother to have his dog neutered or spayed when the dog is old enough.

If you go by the AKC standard, a few white hairs are not considered a fault, even though you rarely actually see them in show dogs. You'd be surprised how many Rotties have seen a pair of tweezers before entering the ring! A white patch, on the other hand, is considered a serious fault, though not a disqualifying one. Even the best of breeders will have the occasional pup with a "serious fault". As some of the others have said, I would take my cue from the breeder's reaction. If it is pointed out and explained that the pup is "pet" quality because of it that is one thing. If the breeder does not come clean when asked directly, I'd be wary. Who knows what else they're glossing over. The most important thing your brother should be asking about are the health tests (HD, elbow, etc) and I would expect the breeder to be upfront, with certificates to prove his claims, if he is reputable.

Actually Jade developed 3 grey hairs on her neck, I believe they are part of her undercoat, anyhow, nothing a pair of scissors cant cure, go for temperment.

Not to beat a dead horse but white spots can and do go away when the pup blows its first coat. Not all go away but they can. ------------------ nick teifke nteifke@dog.com www.angelfire.com/wi/1strottie icq# - 28884141
