Exercise?

What type of exercises do you all give your dogs besides walking and fetching?

Re: Exercise?

I have a 5 yo Rottie, and he and I do the following pretty much every day: a 1 to 2 mile walk, 20 minutes (at least) of fetch, probably about 10 minutes of obedience work (sit, stay, down, heeling, etc.), hide and seek (building up the dog's recall and working his high prey drive). He is a very well behaved boy once he's gotten his workout!

Re: Exercise?

We take Julius swimming when the weather is nice about 4-5 times per week. It's a great workout for him & a good way to stay cool. We do tons of hikes during the winter & summer.

Re: Exercise?

We just got Gunner a plastic ball that you can fill with sand, since he took an interest to a bowling ball my BF brought home. We were afraid to let him play w/the bowling ball because it was so hard and heavy. He LOOOOVES it. The first day we got it (Saturday) we stayed outside with him all day and he played with it all day. It is a good toy for exercise since we don't have an ideal place to walk him. It also promotes a fun interaction between us, and it is not terribly exhausting, becuse he does a lot of the work.

Re: Exercise?

Playing tug is also good exercise! Especially on rainy, muddy days!

Another thing I do on rainy days is take Bear into the kitchen which is carpeted (previous owner...I don't know, what he was thinking but it's far down on the list of renovations) and bounce a tennis ball around so he has to work to catch it...It's a little less intense than full-out fetch and good for ball-eye coordination for flyball.

Re: Exercise?

I've been taking mine roller-blading. Great fun and the dogs can all out run it they want - I usually let them set the pace...

Re: Exercise?

I trail run, snowshoe, and hike with mine, in addition to fetch and find games and several short obedience sessions each day. I do not bring Caine on all trips yet as he is a little too young for the longer, tougher trails. Although he is only a bit over 5 months, he will easily tromp around with us for an hour or so without any signs of tiring. Mikk, who is 6-1/2, has tremendous endurance and will go forever.

In the warmer weather, we play "fetch" at the lake, so the dogs have to swim out to retrieve the toy and then back. Great exercise and no impact on their joints.

When Caine is older, I have hopes that he will be able to accompany me on training runs on the road - something Mikk hates (it's the leash thing).

Re: Exercise?

Lucky enough for me we live right next door to the local high school so before and after school (weekends too) we have run of about several hundred acres of fields, track, stadium stairs and wooded area. My dogs are almost never on a leash. We live in a city that has a lot of city parks that go largely unused.

Re: Exercise?

It would also depend on the age of the dog as to how much exercise they should be doing for that particular age of dog?
