Humane Society I received address labels today from the Humane Society of the United States and would like to send a contribution. I'm just wondering if this is a worthwhile organization or is it a wasteful bureaucratic organization. I don't want to send money if it won't help the animals. If anyone has knowledge about this organization please help me make a responsible decision. Thanks, Madonna

I can give you two pieces of information. The HSUS does not operate any shelters. The salary for the president of the HSUS was over $500,000 last year.

I agree with AngelBunny, please consider keeping your money local. And also MARYDVM is correct, most of the funds in the larger organizations go to "over paid" presidents. I volunteer a the local animal shelter in which "no one" is paid, including our manager & president. Its all done for the love of animals, its very easy to see where the money goes when it is contributed. Food, more fencing, spaying & neutering, not to mention the vet bills when people bring in sick animals. You can feel very good when you give your money locally & "KNOW" its being used for the welfare of the animals

I have found that sometimes you can make your money go even farther if you ask what the shelter needs, such as blankets, dogfood, etc. and then go to shopping for the items yourself. Yardsales can sometimes yield tons of supplies at a cheap price. Best wishes, Angie

When my community had a flash flood 6/28/98. Cleaning supplies, blankets and clothes were donated to the community. When things got back to normal, which took about 6 mos. what suplies and blankets we didn't use we took to our local shelters. We also got two of our 4 cats in 15yr. span from shelters, the other 2 were strays. Madonna

Angie is right, our shelter has a "wish list" that is posted in the paper and the shelter. And things are always needed, food, blankets, papers, paper toweling, cat litter, treats & toys, cleaning supplies, rubber gloves, the list is endless, they would be so thankful to recieve any of these things

Address labels from HSUS is all you got? Just wait, if you contribute even once, your mailbox will be inundated with: note cards stationary xmas cards calendars stickers etc. I know...I finally wrote a letter to the CEO, Paul Irwin, telling them to STOP wasting the contributions on sending me stuff to bribe me to donate again and spend it on the animals. I haven't heard a word since. ------------------ I love my furry kids! Soapie and Buddy's Mom
