Home owners insurance

What is the deal I am hearing from lots of people it is so hard to get insurance if you own a rottie, a dobie, or a pitbull. I have two of the three so does this mean I will never get insurance.

and why are people so against renting to people that own these breeds. I know places that allow large breed dogs just not the aformentioned ones.

If you go under "Chit Chat Corner" and search "Dogs and Homeowners Insurance" there is a link I posted regarding this.

This is fresh off the AKC web site
AKC/TRAVELERS HOMEOWNERS AND AUTOMOBILE INSURANCE

The American Kennel Club ("AKC") has completed an agreement with Travelers Insurance Company to test a new AKC insurance service, which will be available to all owners of AKC registered dogs in approved states. Upon the successful completion of the test, the program will be introduced gradually in most states, allowing you to purchase auto and homeowners insurance from Travelers at low, competitive rates.

The test began the week of September 18th and will continue for the balance of 2000 in the following states: Illinois, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, Michigan and Washington. If the program is deemed successful by AKC and Travelers, it will be offered to all AKC constituents in other states starting in early 2001. A few states may be excluded because of local insurance regulations, which governs all insurance companies.

AKC has chosen Travelers because they have an insurance program designed to meet your needs. The Travelers homeowners program will not exclude any AKC-recognized breeds living in your home. Apart from the advantage of insuring with a reputable, service-oriented company like Travelers, you may also be able to save money over what you're paying for insurance now.

We believe this Travelers' program is a great value:

a.. Low, competitive rates for AKC constituents
b.. Many additional discounts especially if you insure both your car and your home with Travelers
c.. Excellent customer service and around-the-clock Claim Reporting Hotline
d.. Convenient premium payments through checking or savings account deduction
e.. A free, no obligation rate quotation in 15 minutes
f.. Financial stability from the company that wrote the first auto insurance policy, more than 100 years ago
For more information on the program, call (800) 842-0629.

Whether we like it or not; there are a lot of Rottweiler owners who made the problems people have getting and maintaining insurance and rental property very real.

Lots of people walking around pleased as anything that their dog is a "bad ass" and have no trouble telling everyone who even looks remotely interested. Lots of people who let their animals do damage to property, cause problems in the neighborhood and generally make life miserable for anyone around them. I've always believed that your right to own a dog (of any breed) and making YOU happy shouldn't make others around you UNHAPPY because of the way the dog is reared.

People have a right to sleep at night and not listen to barking dogs. Landlords have a right to not have all of the doors scratched up, rugs urine smelling, molding chewed (can you tell I've BEEN a landlord before????) yard looking like a landmine training ground for the US Army. Don't kid yourself; the damage irresponsible dog owners allow their pets to do is INCREDIBLY expensive and make it difficult to justify renting to another dog owner.

Just like with dogs and hotels. Only takes a few irresponsible owners to put a screeching halt to that. Why should they (landlords, insurance companies, hotel management) take a chance??? Say "No Dogs Allowed" and you're much better off.

Sucks to be a responsible owner when there are so many irresponsible ones that came before you and are certainly sure to follow.

i HAVE HAD 2 DIFFERENT HOMEOWNERS INSURANCES..THEY NEVER HAVE EVEN ASKED IF I HAD A DOG, MUCH LESS WHAT BREED I HAVE!! I DONT HAVE AGRESSIVE DOGS ACCORDING TO ME, SO I NEVER EVEN MENTION IT. THE MOST THEY CAN DO IS CANCEL ME IF THE DOG BITES, RIGHT??? OR EXCLUDE THE DOG BITES FROM THE INSURANCE CLAIMS.

Rottmommie,
Unfortunately, you don't have to have a bite claim to get cancelled. A friend of mine got a new place, way out in the country, and put up a 6 ft chain link fence for her 4 Rotties before they moved in. The insurance rep came out to take pictures of the new place for his files, took one look at her dogs in the fenced yard, and cancelled the policy on the spot. No bite history or anything- just 4 Rottweilers. And she'd had insurance with them for several years! She did get another policy with another company.
This is getting to be quite a problem for owners of so-called "vicious" breeds.

Rottmommie -

I process adoption applications for North East Rottweiler Rescue. One of the things we ask prospective adopters to do is to check with their homeowners/renters insurance to make sure that they are covered if they own Rottweilers. You would be surprised at the number of people who come back to me and say that their insurance company will drop them on the spot if they adopt a Rottweiler. It definitely makes finding homes for these beautiful dogs all that more difficult.
