Male can't walk after mating Hi, has anyone ever seen a male dog have difficulty, when trying to get up to walk after mating??? A breeder, whose rotties I went to see today, had a male and female together in a pen to mate with one another, and he could not walk but for a few steps and plopped down. She told me that it was because he gets worn out when mating and gets that way. Is there any truth to this???

They do get very tired when mating... what was the temperature outside in the pen during the mating? That could be the biggest part of it... just plain overheating.

Sometimes they can hurt themselves. They can pull or tear a muscle. I am always there hold the bitch so that she will not cause damage to the male.

I'm with Orville - two dogs should never be left alone to breed without at least one person there to help if need be. I helped a friend with a Dal once - once they were tied the male decided to jump the fence . . . I guess that was his idea of a cigarette break . Too easy to have injury to both partners if they're left alone.Nancy ------------------ von Dorow Rottweilers doggo1@apex2000.net

Wow, I learn so many new things every time I come here. I would never have thought mating could sometimes injure the dogs. This board is a fountain of information!
