carrying mace

Does anyone carry mace with them when out walking? A friend of mine was out with his dogs one night, in the town mind you and a coyote come from behind a bush and attacked his female dog,(half wolf) he had two very small male dogs also, but went for the larger of the three. Anyone here had such an experience?
I am now searching the internet for mace just in case.

Re: carrying mace

I carry pepper spray when I walk Legend. I've heard some people say that it doesn't work the same on dogs...and I hope I never have to use it - but I figure if a dog approaches us aggressively, I'd rather have a shot at stunning it with pepper spray and getting away then trying to beat it with a cane (as I see many folks around here carry for that reason). So far, so good...since I started carrying it, I haven't been approached by an aggressive stray dog, but just in case, I continue to carry it.

Re: carrying mace

there are a few out of control, loose dogs in my neighborhood. I am not sure how I will react if they approach me and my dogs while out on a walk. vinager in a squirt gun or a cattle prod. still shopping.

and we do have coyotes, but they have never approached.

Re: carrying mace

I carry pepper spray with me when walking the dogs. I would much rather have it and not need it, rather than need it and not have it

Re: carrying mace

I don't use it personally, they make a more concentrated pepper spray marketed as Bear Spray, which is much more irritating than the self defense ones sold in stores.

Re: carrying mace

I carry a product called Muzzle, a pepper spray for dogs made by Mace. It's available through many companies on the web, or you can buy it directly from Mace. Haven't had to use it yet, but I always have it with me when we go for walks.

Re: carrying mace

Thanks for the Link BM-

The loose dog situation in my neighborhood has become worse, and I've taken it for as long as possible, but I'm fed up and this is exactly what I was looking for.

Someone else mentioned a cattle prod, but I try to picture myself, holding Makita, and fighting off the dog/s and I'd rather aim and spray than try some fancy moves that will probably not work anyway...

Re: carrying mace

I use a tear gas/pepper spray combination that was extremely effective the one time I had to use it. I carry it with me when I am on training runs or out in public places with my dogs.

A tip - carry it in your free hand. None of these things will do any good if you need them and have to fumble around in your pocket looking for them.

Apparently pepper sray is legal...I just looked up SABRE Dog Attack Deterrent Pepper Spray.

There aren't many wild animals around unless you count the ususal city animals like raccoons, squirrells and skunks. And people around here are generally very responsible and keep dogs on leash so it has never occurred to me to carry anything like this.

Re: carrying mace

We invested in a cattle prod after hearing some people talk about it on the boards. It works well (I shocked Ryan with it...) & it won't hurt Julius by blowing back in his face. We have quite a few loose dogs in the neighborhood & two have attempted to attack Julius. After those two encounters, we invested in a cattle prod. I forget how much we paid for it but it was under $100 and we bought it at Tractor Supply Co. I've had to use it once & Ryan has had to use it once. It has worked well both times & the dogs high-tailed it out of there. It's very easy to use as well. Just the simple push of a button.

Re: carrying mace

I do. In the neighborhood that I used to walk, people let their dogs run around loose so I carry it to protect myself and my dog.

Re: carrying mace

We carry Bear Spray, because we have run into bears when out walking and because it will take an aggressive dog to its knees, if yelling does not work.
It makes mace seem like childs play, BUT and this is a HUGE but, IF you are going to buy and carry Bear Spray, have the sales person instruct you on the CORRECT way to use it.
