Post Have a muzzle on hand !

Recent posts have prompted me to suggest that all owners have a muzzle on hand for times when you might need one. Too often.....the situation may call for immediate restraint...so get a muzzle and keep it where you know it is :o)) The soft, velcro closure muzzles suffice for every day type things that might come up.

Yes..you can BUILD a muzzle out of gauze or other cloth, but an actual muzzle is very quick and easy to apply. Get your pup or dog used to having it put on and taken off...lots of praise and treats, so it won't be a big deal if or when you need to use it.

It's a good idea to take it with you to the vet, just in case it's needed..it will be the right size and adjusted properly and familiar to your dog too.

Great suggestion Jory!!I keep one in my training bag..which never leaves my car. It is also useful should you run into a strange dog that that is injuried and frightned.

It's a good thing Santa is on his way, I'll make sure to add that to the Christmas list. Thanks for the tip

Re: Have a muzzle on hand !

Great thread.

I do not have a muzzle in the car or in the bag of stuff that sometimes accompanies us on an outing. I can't believe I haven't thought of that as Hannah is reactive and it's not beyond the realm of possibility that we could run into a situation where we could use a muzzle. NOT to mention using it on an injured dog one might be trying to help.

Thank you.

Re: Have a muzzle on hand !

To those of you who's dogs are new to a muzzle..introduce your dogs to it slowly...I would put Jas's on at odd times.....we would go for a short ride in the car, then back home for treats, I would put it on her briefly while I watched TV. I......and this is from JudyW ....would call it her hat Jas....it's time to put on your hat I dont put it on her often now...but when I do all I have to do is pull it out and she practically puts in on herself

Re: Have a muzzle on hand !

I could have really benefitted from having one yesterday...they only way I could get water on that stupid chew was to keep pouring it on...He was too freaked out cuz it was stuck .So I couldn't hold his foot in the water....and it was hurting....had I had a muzzle it would have been off sooner and my floor wouldn't be soaked

I have about five muzzles hanging from my rear-view mirror...keeps them where I can see them, but I sure get some funny looks.

Re: Have a muzzle on hand !

One of the first things I got, doggy wise, when Java came to us from rescue, was a muzzle. I've also used a scarf and pantyhose to muzzle dogs quickly when in need. XD Pantyhose works WONDERFULLY!
