16 staples in the groin caused by tie out

This happened almost 2 years ago and I haven't seen or heard of it happening to anyone else. I thought it would be good to tell just so maybe it don't happen to anyone else.
1st when we rescued our rotty girl, she wanted to be outside with my husband ( I was doing dishes) anyway, so she didn't wander anywhere , she was tied on a 12ft lead so she could be near hubby. She was still at this time alittle aggressive and a car went by very slowly and she lunged for the car ( she couldn't reach it). The lead went up under her belly and sliced her groin wide open.she didn't make a sound ( so use to abuse and pain I guess). My husband brought her inside with him and told me what happened. I don't know why he told me where the lead went nor did he but he did. I checked her over but never saw any blood at that time. I was sitting at the comp and Daisy was sitting next to me when my daughter noticed a drop of blood on Daisy's belly. I looked alot more closely. Low and behold there was the open gash right down by her groin. It was open enough that 3 fingers could fit in it. We took her right away to the vet. Took 16 staples to close and she was lucky that the lead was nylon. The lead cauterized the gash. She healed great but it scared us. Since then with this dog..I look alot more closely as she never shows she is hurt. I hope this will alert others who use these leads. In Daisy's case the lead was the problem and the cure. She could have lost alot of blood but for the cautering from the very same lead.

Thanks for taking the time to share your experience. Yet one more reason to not have a dog tied on a lead.

I'm so glad she healed okay. Such strong dogs these are.

Thank you and yes they are strong dogs... in strenght and attitude sometimes. I am not against tying on these leads for short periods of time...she wasn't left out alone either. This happened within 10 mins of being outside. The vet said that she was lucky it wasn't a chain or some other type of lead. The nylon did the deed but helped in the end. Because the lead cauterized the cut...there is only a very fine line for a scar. It would have been worse had it been something else. I don't use that lead much except when starting out on our walk to our camp. ( alot of traffic at first). Then it's taken off both dogs.

Re: 16 staples in the groin caused by tie out

My sister and her husband has a 40 pound short haired multi mixed breed dog. Their yard isn't fenced and they don't let him roam. They were out doing yard work and had him on his tie out too. They were not paying him too much attention until he suddenly started to scream bloody murder. He had the cord looped around his foot and it ended up taking off one of his toes. $900 later he is one toe short. Thank goodness it wasn't his whole foot. They are not using that thing again.
