Re: Price For Pup

I would have to agree. I have heard of people asking more than that for a pup, but I would never pay that. I guess it depends on how much you are willing to pay, what the pups pedigree is like and if you think it is worth that.

Re: Price For Pup

OUCH. I know that things cost more here in CA (if that is where the pup is coming from,) but...OUCH. I do think that is out of line. I looked at, and talked to, many breeders here in the state and outside, and none of the people I talked to had pup prices set that high. But...if this pup is all that you want, and you can afford it...then maybe it is the right thing for you.

And...are you saying you've found the right PUP, or just the right potential breeding?

Re: Price For Pup

moho,
are the pups born yet? If so when will they be ready to go? Did you just start your search for a pup, or have you known or been in contact with this breeder? I'm just asking because I have a feeling I know who your dealing with. If you just started your quest, check everything they tell you, do a search here and you will find all the questions you should have answered as a new puppy mommy to be. Are you buying this pup to show or work with?

Re: Price For Pup

I wouldn't ask someone to pay that much for a puppy myself, BUT if this puppy is what you're looking for in every way then the price shouldn't be the deciding factor. If the parents and siblings are successful in the area that you want to focus your time and energy on, then that is a good start (but still no guarantee with a baby).

BUT, before you shell out that kind of money check both parents names on the OFA website (www.offa.org), as well as grandparents and any older siblings you know the names of. Regardless of the price you want to make sure that you're going to have a good chance of getting a healthy puppy! Also, if the puppies older siblings are doing well in dog shows you should be able to easily document exactly how well they are doing through the AKC website (go to "store", then "points/awards" and then you'll have to sign in...it's fairly quick and easy...and free). You can then search for the names of these successful siblings as well as check out what mom & dad have done .

Re: Price For Pup

Don't know if you got a chance to check, but in a quick check on the OFA webpage I found mom and dad's health check info (no cardiac clearances).

Here's a link to mom's OFA page:
http://www.offa.org/display.html?appnum=811762#animal
and one to dad's:

Re: Price For Pup

The 4 main health checks for Rottweilers are hips, elbows, hearts and eyes. In looking at the OFA webpage I noticed that the parents do not have their hearts certified through OFA (they could have done them independently by a board certified cardiologist and not sent them in to the OFA...but I would make sure they're done before paying even $10 for a puppy).
Here's some information about heart problems in Rottweilers:

Re: Price For Pup

mavides,
i have been searching for approx 2 weeks now
i owned a beautiful rott named dude for 10 years
i rescued him from a friend (at approx 6 months) that badly neglected him
i had to put him down due to health issues (cancer) about 3 weeks ago
i've searched and contacted breeders in my area
kind of a strange situation
each one i talk to bad mouths the other
not sure who to listen to
wonder if it's like this everywhere
i know you're not supposed to recommed breeders in this forum
is there a website that you know of that might help
thanks

Re: Price For Pup

I live in your area and this past spring I had to do the same breeder search in the Bay Area. It was actually a little overwhelming but 2500 sounds way overpriced. The most common price I found for a show pup was $1000 and $800 if there was a dq. I do have a suggestion for you, but I don't know if I can post it here. You can email me if you want but please put RDN in the subject line so that I will catch the email. Do not post email addresses on the forums

Also, I can relate to your situation of wanting to get another dog shortly after yours has passed. I too had an awesom Rottie who had cancer and I found and purchased my pup from a breeder within a month. So contact me if you want since we have similar experiences, and I'll tell you about the breeder who I wish I had waited for. She's responsible and much more reasonable than that $2500 figure. The breeder that I went with also has new puppies that will be available in a month, I think.

Good Luck!!

Re: Price For Pup

Personally, I would keep looking. In all honesty, two weeks isn't very long to search for a GOOD breeder. When I got my girl from animal control, I thought I knew what kennel I wanted to get a puppy from in the future but after reading here for a while, I realized there was sooooo much more that I needed to learn before I even started looking for a breeder and the kennel I was looking at was nothing more then a very clean puppy mill!

One of the sections of the forum has a couple of stickies of what to look for in a puppy and a breeder. Both are excellent and written by people who know what they are talking about.

Also, since recommending breeders through the forum is STRICTLY prohibited, go to the AKC website and get the link for the National Rottweiler Club and your local California Club. Both should be able to help you find a GOOD, ETHICAL breeder.

Re: Price For Pup

Just a little bit of input. We waited 3 years to get our boy and he isn,t even show quality. I agree with others. You are jumping the gun , so to speak a little and it sounds like $2500 is really not where you wanna be. Slowly slowly catchie monkey....
