Cool best age differences

Sometime in the future we would like to get another dog. Our dogis around 10 momths old now. If we waited until he was a year or a year and a half, would that be an ok age difference between the two dogs?
We wouldnt be getting a rotty, but instead a smaller breed of a submissive nature.

Re: best age differences

I think it may be about more than age. temperament, training and gender of dog may have more to do with it. also, your life style and resources would have some impact.

I have 2 rotties that get along, but one older dog that doesn't get along at all with my male. makes life complicated. Life is no doubt easier with one!

I think he has a good temperament, he isnt overly dominant or submissive with dogs or humans. He does however LOVE dogs..he has never met a dog that he didnt get along with..and he has been around dogs since he was 8 weeks old.
Im just wondering about age because i remember reading that getting two dogs of a similar age or a small age gap isnt good(same sex too)..so im just wondering whats considered a small gap, and if a year is an ok gap.

Re: best age differences

I'd say 2+ years in between. The 1st dog is still very much a pup/adolescent until then. Also, I would make sure the 1st dog is EXTREMELY reliable in it's obedience before adding to the mix.

I'd say more like 3-4 years, personally. You want to have raised your first dog successfully before adding a new one, and even at 2, you've usually got a way to go before the dog's mature enough and trained well enough to be "coasting".

Re: best age differences

I agree with Spidey 3-4 years. These Rottys can be slow to mature especially the males and I like to have a really good foundation on my dogs and some titles on both ends before I add another to the mix. I feel if I add another pup to the mix to soon I am short changing one of the other guys, as puppies need so much more of your time.

I also like how my older dogs teach the puppies the rules of the house!

And the puppies keep the older dogs energetic and young.

I like they way you worded it as "short changing" one or the other. I think if you're doing a lot with your dog (as you should be with a working breed, in my opinion, as with any breed bred to do a job), by two years you've still got a long way to go. I also feel that dogs only two years apart are still well within the "danger zone" for not getting along, if they're same-sex. At two, because the dog is not yet fully mature, you also haven't yet finished seeing what you did right and what you did wrong with your current dog as a puppy, and I think that's important to know before you take on another puppy.
