Coat length

I just acquired a wonderful rott, Bear, from our local SPCA. he's about 10 months old and a real pleasure!

I have noticed that although he has classic rottie markings and shape his coat is longer than most rotties that I have seen...it's maybe an inch long especially around his neck and down his spine where other rotties I have seen have shorter coats more like a doberman's. Is this typical of other rotties out there?

The rottweiler standard states that the coat is to medium length. A dobe coat is incorrect. Just because there are a lot of rotts with dobe coats does not make it correct rottweiler coat. There is a reason why it is called a dobe coat

Re: Coat length

My first rott, Reba, had a medium coat. She seemed to shed abit all year long.

My new girl, Rita, has a longer coat. She doesn't shed much on a day to day basis. But in the summer she blew her coat, if that is the correct term. Clumps of hair were left on the floor and everywhere else. When I brushed her, I would get handfuls.

Now she is back to normal.

Re: Coat length

I was just wonderign about coat length because time and time again when I say he's a rottweiler people say he doesn't look like one because of his coat. It bugs me that they're so quick to criticise when he's such a great dog.

I'll upload some pics right now so everyone can have a look at him.

Bears coat seems to shed a little bit, but nothing excessive so far. I guess I'll have to wait and see how much undercoat he puts on this winter....

Re: Coat length

It sounds as if you've come accross a true BEAR treasure from the ASPCA! A very dear friend of mine adopted a longer coated fellow and Atlas is "perfect" in their eyes. They couldn't love him more, and I'm sure Bear has endeared himself already.

Yes, too short, too long, lacking undercoat, or undercoat showing thru, lacking correct color, an open coat or a wavy coat are all undesirable. But it has absolutely nothing to do with intellegence or lovability! And that's what counts most. GOOD LUCK with your boy! And thank you for giving a needy guy a loving forever home.

A long coat, as I understand it due to a recessive gene.

Re: Coat length

I just looked at your photos in the Gallery and Bear looks like he has a normal coat to me...handsome guy!!!! His eyes are really light...do you think there might be a drop of German Shepherd in him somewhere?

My Rottie Toby also had a thick luxurious coat...but still considered medium length...and I've seen quite a few Rotties with that wide ridge of longer hair along their back. I think it's beautiful.

Re: Coat length

Wow his eyes are light aren't they....truth be told, I'd say any drop of anything is possible....I don't know...he came from the SPCA with no papers but the docked tail and removed dewclaws. Whatever he is I love him and don't like people making fun of his coat!

Ha! Show them a picture of my Cyrus and they will be so busy making fun of him they won't bother your Bear.

I saw him in the gallery, he is beautiful! Congrats!

Just tell them to stick it....I never understand why people think it's OK to criticize other peoples' dogs publicly. It's as rude as telling somebody there is something wrong with their child. Every dog is beautiful.

My BF has a long-coated Akita. The long coat is a recessive gene. He's had people just out-and-out tell him he was lying...it's not an Akita. I feel like knocking those people in the chops.

Oh my gosh ,folks comment on Cyrus's coat all the time...and yes, most doubt he is a Rottweiler...but everyone ends up loving him so I don't mind.

But I love him the most! (spitting out looong black hairs )

Re: Coat length

I checked the photos as well. He's certainly handsome and I would not consider his coat long. People can be ignorant and rude at the same time.

Re: Coat length

Congrats on adopting this boy! We adopted our girl when she was about that age too.

I just checked his photos too. I think he's very handsome and my rottie mix girl's coat is similar to his.

Yes, his eyes are pretty light, but even if he's a mix it doesn't reduce his potential for being a wonderful companion!!

Just ignore the rude people, life's too short!

Re: Coat length

There is nothing long about Bear's coat. Since you can not know for certain what Bear's background is you can only go on what Bear looks like. I have seen AKC pedigreed rottweilers with the same light eyes as Bear's. From those pictures, I would say that you have a rottweiler and nothing more.
Ignore the people that try to tell you otherwise. Bear is your dog and you decide what kind of dog Bear is. Just have Bear be the well behaved and know that you have the best dog in the world. If you want to have a little fun with the folks that try to tell you that you do not have a rottweiler, just tell them that you have an oversized dachund and look them in the eye and dare them to say other wise
