Homeowners Insurance owning a Rottweiler

Thanks to everyone that has responded about owning a Rottweiler and other animals, that information should boost my 11 year old spirit. Now,my other question I need answered is: Have any of you had difficulties getting or keeping your current homeowners insurance having a Rott? I don't want to lose mine purchasing a Rott.

Thanks in Advance

Hey, I have wondered the same thing. My neighbor who has Cheasapeake Bay Retreivers did tell me that her dog of choice is a Rottweiler, but her homeowners insurance would not permit for her to have a Rottweiler so she ended up with CBR's, similar personality but they look like labs. Our homeowners insurance knows we have dogs, but has never inquired as to their breed, and we have not volunteered the information. I would inquire before you get a rott.

Please be aware that insurance coverage rules vary from state to state. An insurance company that will insure a home with a rottweiler in one state may rule not to insure them in another state. Sometimes it is left up to a district manager to decide what they'll cover, and sometimes its left up to the individual agencies. Sometimes certain breeds are excluded, sometimes only dogs with a bite history.

Bottom line, you can find coverage in your area if you shop around, but sometimes it is difficult and can take a lot of research. Don't go by the rules and coverage in another state or area, it likely won't apply to you where you live.

If your current insurance company were going to exclude certain breeds, you can be sure they would make it their business to find out the breed of your dog. Since they haven't asked, its likely they don't have any breed restricitons at this time.

I had Mercury, until they dropped me just before I bought a new house because of Buster. Safeco picked me up no questions asked. They did send an agent to the house after we moved in. Check other threads for the companies that allow/ban Rotties.

Also check AKC's website; I believe that they have a list of insurers that accept all breeds (it is a very short list!). There is also a company that recognizes CGC's and accepts dogs that have it; sorry, don't remember the name.

Speaking from experience, the folks on that list don't necessarily insure our breed in California. It is very difficult to find homeowners insurance here that will cover the dogs. Or cover you if you have the dogs. It's not the home companies themselves that make those decisions, it's the individual office owners. You might call 10 Farmers agents and the 11th is fine with your dogs. Check with vets, local breed clubs, friends, etc.
