New Crate Question.......

Thanks to all who answered my post about where to get a crate. Now that I bought one I find out it may be too small. Both Pet Edge and Upco have their x-large crates listed with dimensions of 48L x 28W x 35H, which is the size I bought off of ebay. Anyone know where I could look for a larger crate?

Thanks very much!

That is the size I have and it is pretty big. How big is your dog?

Unless you own a really big male Great Dane, Newfoundland, or Saint Bernard, a 48" crate should be plenty big enough. The largest crate I own is a 42" and it is quite spacious for a tallish bitch.

I can't see any reason why you would need anything larger. The dog is in the crate to lie down and rest quietly, not to give parties.

Well, I don't have him yet.......... But I hear he's pretty big! Just don't want him to be cramped.... I guess the only measurment I'm really worried about is the 28" wide. Is that really big enough for a rottie to lay comfortably on his side?

Thanks!

Thanks Judi!

To be honest, this is my first dog that will be using the crate (thanks to all I've learned from rott.net members). Since I've already purchased the 48" crate, I'm really glad to hear it should be big enough!

Look at it this way, 28" is one inch over the maximum height standard for a male Rottweiler. So an oversized male could lay on his side with his legs straight out like he was standing. In reality, his legs will probably be bent a little bit, so there will be even more room.

My crates are 42Lx26Wx30H and my dogs are very comfortable in them. The crates in my van are smaller then that and everyone rides comfortably. As Judy said, they aren't throwing parties in the crates.

I have a crate exactly the size you just mentioned and what you should realize that in size it is comparable to my kitchen table lol.

Yes, a 48" crate is HUGE. I had one and I gave it away, it just overwhelmed everything.

This is the size that we purchased for Julius. We have the room for it & so decided to get it. Julius is swimming in it...but at least it's spacious for him when he's in it.

When we get a pup (.....someday....), we'll have to downsize. But it's just perfect for Julius.

We have the 42x26x30 purchased for use both as travel and in home. The Cherokee accomodates the 30", and both crates. They came with dividers (for puppyhood) and a 2 door entrance.

My friend Phyllis has the 48x28x35 (with 2 doors) and a much larger van. She travels both dogs (without divider) in it together: a male Rottweiler and female Dogue de Bordeaux. Bordeaux's, even as pups, are huge. She has a second crate for home.
