Have 1 six month old/ getting a five month this weekend...need advice...

HELLO -

I have TOBY who is a male and 6 months old, I was asked to dog sit for 6 months for a 5 month old female and I honestly told the woman that I can't do that for 6 months because I wouldn't be able to give her back and my Toby would be attached as well.....so therefore they offered to give her to me, (they are having a house built and can't take her to the apartment), they want to make sure that she is going to a good home, well she is, a very good one!!, she has all her shots and is updated etc.....I want to bring her as a trial to see how TOby will act - is there anything I can do to help prepare him in this situation (once she arrives) I really hope this works because he would love a buddy!!!! I also need to have them both fixed........what age is good for that and do I have to wait for the first heat?

PLEASE HELP!

Wow...two young pups just about six months old would be really difficult to handle. I would make sure that you can handle all the training and work that is going into having two such young dogs.

I am sure others will have more to say on it...but at this point, if you are unsure, I dont think I would do it.

Good luck whatever you choose to do.

Well, being both un altered, I would def have the female spayed at 6 months in my Opinion. do not want any big oopsies....Congrats, but you will def have your hands full. Sign up for OB class for both of them. One one day the other another day. Train them seperately. And good luck to you

Definitely get her spayed asap.

Another thing, keep them separated as much as you can. You want them to both bond to you, not each other. You cannot let them live together all the time or they will start to look towards each other instead of you.

And, with two pups, you will have to train, train, train! It's difficult to raise one properly, with two it's even harder. You are taking on quite a task!

It's a shame when people throw away a pup for this reason. Why don't they board her and go and visit and work with her each day? It seems as if they are giving up way too easy on her.

I felt like asking someone to pet sit for 6 months was alot to ask, by then this pup will be addapted to us and our style, and to my Toby, however I have heard thru the grapevine that the dog is on a chain all day long and is walked every night, I don't care for that style that is why I want to see how it will be with us and with my Toby.........my friend here on the Island swears by 2 dogs and my Toby is a rather good PUP (more for my husband), i am hoping for success

2 puppers is a TON of work (I have 3 dogs ages 16mos, 2 yrs and 4 yrs). I wouldn't change it for a thing but there are days where I'm downright exhausted!

Everyone gave great advice on spaying and training...I def would sign them both up for classes seperately, it will really help develop the bond between human and dog. And you never know, one dog may excel at one sport, and the other at something else..makes for a fun variety!

It this is the case, then it sounds as if she will definitely be much better being owned by you!

If Toby is better for your husband than you, then YOU are the one who needs to take him through obedience classes. He should and must learn to respect and listen and obey you at all times, especially before he gets to be much bigger.

Good luck to you.

I would caution you that if Toby does end up needing surgery for his hips, the very last thing you need is another pup as the recovery requires extensive restriction and rehab.
