Whining puppy, upsetting dog...

The people across the street from us just got a puppy. I thing they have to dog chained behind their house. It is whining a lot. Poor baby. I saw it in the front yard once and it looked tiny, not even 3 months old. I cannot see it, but I can hear it from time to time when I bring Doc outside and I am pretty sure they have it chained outside.

Doc seems to be able to hear it a lot more then me! (My hearing is less then perfect.) He has been on eggshells. Every noise he hears he runs to the door with his "I'm here!" Single bark. When we are outside he'll do his "Rotty stance" I call it and stare at the house and sometimes bark and sometimes whine. I caught him at the window this morning looking out and whining, and when I left I heard the puppy whining.

Any advice on how to help Doc calm down? Talking to the neighbors is not really an option. And my DF walked over and peeked in their backyard and he had a house, food, and water so looks like they're setting him up as an outside dog, but taking care of it (so far)...

I know. I feel so bad! And Doc whining is making me think of him more.

Sometimes you wonder why people get dogs! Probably messed inside or chewed a shoe or some other horrible puppy infraction.

You know. Some dogs are just bad...

Dogs shouldn't be outside, when you get a dog it should be because you want a companion not someone to be guarding your yard. For what , how do you benefit from a chained dog outside, other than a possibility of it getting loose and hurting someone because it has absolutely no social skills . People don't understand dog isn't a toy or a subject you can just put away on a chain one day because you're tired of it! Dog want teach itself not to pee in a house or not too chew on shoes, it takes time, patience and dedication to have a behaved pet. They're not born trained . Again, sorry for you, Doc and the poor unfortunate puppy .

This is a great thread about dogs living outside, many great posts by experts from this site. It really makes you think and anyone who is considering keeping their dog outside should read it:

I'd suggest that you just tell Doc to knock it off, it is none of his business and that he'll get used to it just as he must get used to other sounds when living in an urban area. this is just a new sound that's all.

Whether the puppy should be living outside it beyond your authority.

I'm fostering two 7 week old puppies right now and to be honest with you, when they're inside the house and in their playpen and they whine you can totally hear it outside and almost across the street. That puppy whine sound seems to really travel....

Yeah, that's what we've been doing...

We'll keep doing it, and he'll get used to it soon I'm sure.
