After my husband passed away, I went on a search for a puppy, any breed, to keep me company. My brother insisted I meet a friend of his who was temporarily keeping a 2yr old Rott, until a good home could be found. Truly ignorant doesn't even come close to describing me!!! I met Alex, he jumped up and licked my face, I started crying, and fell in love. I took him home that day. Then I researched and read and asked questions and learned about him. He truly was a gift from God!!! BUT... my "free" dog had heartworms when I got him, as his first owners were HORRIBLE people!! Thank God I had the funds to take care of him and get him through it!!

Even though I am a success story, I wouldn't recommend following in my footsteps. I got lucky with 2 extremely intelligent, loving "fur-sons". I totally agree with TrishB, as far as being patient! There are far too many lost dogs out there that ended up with people unwilling or unable to care for and understand the Rottweiler.

I have rescued 2 dogs, Alex and Andrew (a Shiba Inu mix) and will continue to do so. It soothes my heart to know I am making a difference in the world.

After more then a year of disappointments in finding a puppy, one did fall out of the sky. I talked to Fizbin's breeder at the 2001 ARC nationals without even knowing she had a litter on the ground. I asked if she could recommend a breeder, her being in the NE and I on the west coast. Less then two weeks later (she checked me out) she e-mailed me and told me that I could have my pick of her males. That was how I got Fizbin.
I had been in contact with Cipher's breeder for more then a year before, asking if she was going to breed. Every few months she would say that it hadn't happened yet. Then the e-mail saying she had been bred. Then the e-mail that said that she was pregnant via ultra sound the day after Misty died. Cipher has been a gift.

This is exactly what Logan is. We had called the rescue about another dog they had, but it had already found a home. She then let me know that she had a couple rescue puppies. We went to look at them and took home Logan. It was a total fluke, no research just knew we wanted a rottie, DH had one before. I also usually rescue, although now that I am hooked, my next dog will probably be more sought out for certain charactoristics, another one just like Logan, but registered.

The whole point is - sometimes, the perfect dog will fall into your lap. It's a gift - and we should accept it as such. But for those who have to purchase a pup, take your time and the one you find too - will be a gift. It took me 2 1/2 years to get Parker and if it meant that I had to wait that long again to get a dog a great as him, I'd happily do it.

Take your time, there's no rush. The perfect pup (purchase, rescue or otherwise) is out there, waiting for you.

Thank you for your post TrishB. I plan to adopt a puppy in the spring and now I have a better idea how to prepare in the meantime. I'm one of those lucky ones who found this forum before getting a rott, and I thank Patty and others from whose experience I learn.
