Running my puppy?

I am currious if anyone knows how old my Rott needs to be before I start running him? He is just 6 mo's old and would like to start running with him. I am currious about his elbow's and hip's. When will they be able to handle the stress...or if I shouldn't even risk it.

Thanks
LilOzzie

IMO - you should not run a puppy until at least 18 months old, and then only for short distances. They are still growing, plus, like people, they need to build up endurance.

I wouldn't risk it. Free running (while in play) is one thing at this age, but forced running can be hard on growing bones and joints.

Many wait until the age of 18 months before doing any regular running.

Ditto. A 6 month old pup is waaaay too young to run, unless he can stop when he or she decides.During the summer heat too much excercise can be extremely detrimental.

And if you are going to start at 18 months, I would suggest preliminary x-rays of the hips and elbows to make sure everything looks right before you start the running. This is especially true if you will be running on a hard surface (asphalt, concrete, etc.)

I would also recommend the prelim x-rays of hips and elbows. Better to be on the safe side.
