what does a rotti pup look like?

I got a puppy from a local shelter. They said she was "2 months and 4 weeks". I took her to the vets and she weighs 11 lbs. The pound said she was a german shepherd but she looks a lot like a rotti pup (I have never seen a rotti pup at 3 months old so this is a guess). Poor girl is skin and bones. The day after I got her home she started to cough really bad. Took her back to the vets and he said she has kennel cough and a bad case of worms :( She is a ball of fire and eats fine. She saw my miniature horses today and was so funny. She ran up to them play bowed and ran away. I hope to get some photos of her soon. I am calling her Gisha Girl.

So my request is this could you post some photos of your pups at 2 to 4 months (or at least under a year of age if you really want to show off your kid ;)

Um, 2 months and 4 weeks would be 3 months old...but anyways....a quick description of a rottie puppy - looks like a baby bear. Ears folded over - not stand up straight - should have a rounder head versus a GSD which has a longer snout - most obvious would be the markings...

You can do a google search for "rottweiler puppy pictures" - it will bring up mostly breeder websites, which is why I did not post anything here...

Also check out www.akc.org and check out the GSD and rottie breed standards...they have a good description of each breed and what they should look like.

Congrats on the new addition - get her into classes as soon as her KC and worms are all cleared up and the two of you will have a good long lifetime of fun!!!

I have a picture of Tyson at 6 months in the gallery its probably one of the last pages. Im pretty sure your vet would be able to tell the difference between a rottweiler and german shepherd.

Her markings are that of a rotti (even the brown spots over the eyes). Thank you for the google info I didn't know you could do that for pictures. I couldnt belive it when the pound gave me the 2 months and 4 weeks (they had no idea why they put it that way instead of 3 months). But shouldnt she weigh more than just 11 lbs at that age? How much did your guys weigh at that age? I will post a photo as soon as I can. :)

Well, if she is skin and bones she will be underwight. Average weight is anywhere from 20-30 pounds..once the worms an KC are cleared up you can put weight on her safely - you dont want her gaining too much too quickly.

Have fun with her - there is a TON of info to be found in the forums...I know when I first joined I was a 'search' junkie - and I asked ALOT of questions!!!

Please excuse the mess. Gisha wanted to see everything so she was draging it out. I hope you can see a face and a side photo of her. She dose have a tail do all rotties have no tails?

She is so verrrrry cute! But not a Rottie. There could be some Rottie there but I think she looks mostly shepherd. Looks a bit younger than 3 months too.
Please stick around anyway and join our bunch of dog lovers. You'll find many of us own and love other breeds too.
You'll learn a lot, laugh a lot, and maybe even shed a tear or two.

Welcome!

I would say Gisha is a mix. But, I'm far from an expert.

Very cute, either way!

What you have (in my expert in my own mind opinion) is a Rottie and a GSD mix. I agree she looks aweful young for 3 months, but awefully cute too

what a doll
She sure looks like a rottie/gsd mix. And some rotties do have long tails but they tend to curve upward, so the tail is more GSD. Even being mixed you'll probably find a lot of her behavior is rottie, so stick around and don't hesitate to ask questions. (Hooch is a mix. He only got to 60 lbs but he thinks he's all rottie so don't tell him he's not. He's my little mini-rott)

The link I gave you earlier has many pics of my dogs, two of whom have tails.....you can see a natural Rottweiler tail in the photos (they are European imports, and in Europe, breeders are required by law to leave the tails on now).

I agree, she looks mostly Shepherd and is probably closer to 8-10wks of age, especially based on her weight. Neither breed (GSD or Rottweiler) would give you a pup of 11lbs at 3mos, even if underweight.......and she doesn't look like some of the walking skeletons you see come into rescues, so I doubt she's morbidly underweight.
