Thumbs down problems with gentle leader

I was wondering if anyone has had problems with a gentle leader headcollar completely coming off or suspects a design flaw.

My rott leaped toward a small dog. My husband pulled back with both hands. Syder throw her head back and turned her head and she slipped out the gentle leader.

Was wondering if anyone knew of any problems like this. Since both of my rottis participated in attacking the little dog, they are going to be put down. And I have never had a problem like this before.

I am very sorry that you will have to put your dogs down.
The gental leader and Halti brand head halters do not fit rottweilers very well. In order for them to stay on, they have to be fitted very tight around the muzzle, effectively making them muzzles. Way back when I used them, they would come off just as you discribe.

I use a head halti during some training and it clips onto the collar so if he slips it off I still have him leashed.

Sorry about your loss of pets.

The Gentle Leader does not have anything that clips to the regular collar.

And I'm sorry to hear about your dogs.

A properly fitted GL rarely comes off unlike the Haltis which come off all the time. The neck part is supposed to be very very snug so that you can just get a finger under it . In the event that the dog slips the nose loop the GL would still be attached to the dog's neck like a regular collar.

If your dog slipped both the nose loop AND the neck collar then the neck collar was not fitteed properly

VERY Dog aggressive dogs should wear a standard choke slightly larger than normal, along with the GL with the ring from the choke attached to the leash along with the GL

Thanks you for your concern. The gentle leader was fitted very tighly across the back of the head. Their is no clip on either my gentle leader or halti. They are, however, about 3 yrs old.

the collar part of the gentle leader was very tight and your dog was still -somehow-able to slip out of it and get off the lead or they slipped out of the nose loop and were close enough to the dog to grab it?

haltis on the other hand come off easily and frequently and that's why the new Haltis have a short strap to hook to the dog's collar

She threw her head back and then twisted her head. The Entire collar then flew back at my husband--he was pulling real hard to restrain her.

I am wondering if the GL people know about a problem and were slow to do something
or possibly have done nothing.

We have had occassions in the past when she would rub her nose and get out of the nose loop

Thank you all for your help

A dog slipping out of the collar part of a PROPERLY tight fitting GL is such a rare event that the Premier people are not likely to do anything.

Conversely, Haltis slip off alot so that company had to do something

The Premier company DOES reccomend that dangerous (IE: very dog or human aggressive dogs) ONLY use the GL with the steel buckle and not the plastic quick release snap

I had my lab mix on a halti and she was definitly able to get out of it. There was no place to attach a collar to it, and while it realy helped her to not pulled, I was really nervous any time there were other dogs around as I knew she could get out if she really wiggled. I will never use it again either.
I'm really sorry about your dogs. I had to put lucy down after she got loose after the plastic clip on her collar broke and she went after a neighbour. Needless to say I no longer use haltis/gentle leaders or collars with plastic clips. It is something that is so sensless. We buy these things thinking that they have been tested, but there are obvious product defects that are costing dogs their lives.
Relish the happy memeories with your dogs.

If you look at any companies information that make harnesses, collars or halters with plastic snaps; they all say not for tying animals out or for aggressive animals. Common sense would also dictate that plastic snaps are for our convienence and not for public safety when dangerous animals are being outfitted or when your pets safety is vital.
