Just got a Rotti

we are new parents of a 6 1/2 month old. we are getting her fixed. what can we expect. will her temperment change? will her personality change. will she hate us? Never owned a dog by our selves. our parents did but we never paid attention to the small details.

any advice would be great

I have to ask - WHY would she "hate" you?

No, once she is healed up she will be back to her regular self. I've had two females that were spayed around 6 months, after the stitches are out there is no indication that they know anything happened. Dogs don't hold grudges over such things and it is for her own good. You are saving her from the risk of certain cancers, as well as the danger of conditions like pyometria (pus filled uterus!). Sounds like you are on your way to being good responsible pet parents.

Congrats on your new young dog.

She won't hate you, she's merely undergoing a surgical procedure that will make both your lives easier, since you're not breeding her.

One thing I would suggest is getting her into a good training class, and continue this for the next year or two. She will LOVE you for it.

At this age, keep her leashed, and get her used to you. Never ask her for a behavior unless you can control the outcome (the reason for the leash). Start teaching her control around the house, and be patient with her - she's in new surroundings, and needs to learn the ropes. Set her up for success, and she'll thank you for it for years to come. There's lots of good reading material about various humane training methods out there, so I'd likely spend my time learning about that, as well as getting her out and about to see the world around her.

How did you come about getting a girlie of this age?

Welcome to the forums.

we found her for sale in the paper. we were wanting to get a puppy but everytime we would get ready to go pick one up the breeder sold them on us. we got fed up with breeders. we were lucky to find her. she is pure German rot. house broken, great with children, and a loving soul. we got her for a decent price and she is well worth it.

No she is an American Rott unless she was born in Germany. The only difference between American and German Rotts are the location they were born.
So is she papered?
There is a lot of things you need to learn about a rottie and I suggest reading a lot of the forms here. They will guide you into having a wonderful dog.
But mainly sign her up for classes and have her in training for a long time. Obedience classes are a wonderful thing for your dog and for you.

yes she is papered. we dont know if we are going to take her to classes. we want to but we just dont have the money right now. we got a great deal on her thats mainly the reason we bought her.

i just took her to the vet, she is accually 7 1/2 months old, when i looked at her papers she was born in October. she weighs 70 lbs. is that a good size?

Do you feed your rots certain times of the day or do you have her bowl filled all the time and let them eat when they want?

Classes are not really "optional" with this breed.

Rottweilers take a long time to mature and they need the socialization and mental stimulation of training class. I would look for low cost county recreation center classes for basic obedience in your area.

What it will "cost" you in money is far less than what NO training will cost

Congradulations on your new puppy. Get her into training it will be the best thing you can do. Also make sure she is on a high quality food. Spaying her will help you and her alot. She won't hate you for she won't even remeber it.

"we got a great deal on her thats mainly the reason we bought her." Hmmmm I"m still trying to figure this one out! Now you're telling us that the only reason your got her is becuase you got a good deal on her????? is that what i'am to understand. You sound like you're buying a car or a pair of shoes. Rotts aren't for everyone and they must have training in obedience/socialization etc. they are a very stubborn breed. I do give you an applauce for going to have her spayed.

Classes will vary depending on the location - in my area Group classes at a training facility run around $65.00 for 8 weeks. The County offers basic Dog Obedience for $45.00 for 8 weeks.

Petsmart and other BIG pet stores also have basic classes as well.

You will find that classes and training with your dog will really enhance your relationship.

I previously said that we have been lookinf for a rotti for a while now. we wanted a pup but everytime we decided on a day to pick it up the breeder sold it. so we found Sasha and even though she was older than we wanted, we got her. very happy we went with her. and yes, we got her for a good price. there is nothing wrong with that.

I will look in to classes, I do want what is best for my baby, she listens to us very well for only having her for 5 days, the only problem that we cant seem to over come is she doesnt like to be outside alone. We have a dog stake in the ground with a chain. whenever we go inside or walk too far away (out of her reach) she goes crazy? any advice?

enroll in group classes.get her spayed.get books on our breed.read topics throughout this forum.even if you never plan on showing, visit a dog show if possible, meet breeders, ask questions.socialization is a must in this breed...as so is obedience training.can't cut corners there.
feed twice a day a good quality food.leave for 20 minutes at a time and pick up what is left.i prefer this to free choice freeding all day.
never be afraid to ask anything.
a rottweiler needs alot of human attention...training will strenghten your bond.
it's prefered at first one person starts the training...then later on have trainer work with both.

My advice would first get that darn stake and throw it away. Chaining a dog is a bad idea. Next do a search of the forums to find out why it is a bad idea.

Then, after you have made an appointment with a trainer, pick up a couple of books: "Rottweilers for Dummies" and Culture Clash" are 2 good ones to start with.

Come back to the forum and read, read, read.

I am glad you felt you got a good deal on your dog and of course you love her but also do a search on responsible breeders so you can do better in the future.

And most of all: Stay here! These folks know Rottweilers and have a vast amount of knowledge to share. I have learned so much from them. Please don't be thin skinned about some answers you may get. Folks here don't mince words and I am thankful for it!

Welcome aboard and happy learning!
