Re: Attacked while biking

The fence I was talking about this time around was a real, above ground, visible, heavy gauge wire fence. The GSD forced her muzzle through with lightening speed. That's why I now say...."never say never". Things can, and do, happen so fast.

We do pass a different dog (very friendly) who's invisible fence is right along another sidewalk we walk on. The thing is...I didn't know if he was friendly or not the first time he ran at us.... !!

It would be nice if sidewalks were on both sides of the street. I did get permission from one neighbor that I could cross the street and walk along his yard if the dog "Moose" (another fence aggressive dog), tried to jump over his fence to get us. It's amazing just how many people leave their dogs outside to do as they wish never realizing the danger they could find themselves in (not to mention the public).

Re: Attacked while biking

Shirley,

I saw the title of this thread & I gasped.

I am SO glad that Guerin & Phil are okay. I know how scary those situations are & Phil really thought on his feet! You know my feelings on the invisible fences. We have so many dogs in the neighborhood who are "contained" by the fences & the majority of those dogs roam at large. What a scary situation! Phil handled it wonderfully...as I would expect he would.

Hopefully your complaints will work & these dogs will not bother you again.

Yeah, he was supervised, he was watched as he cleared the yard fence and then ran accross the street to scale a second 10 fence. My dog is contained now a physical fence with the invisible fence as back up, I have not had a problem since at my house. He needs to go through 2 lines of the invisible fence to get out, not just one.

Re: Attacked while biking

Shirley,

I am sooo sorry that happend to your boy. I would freak out if anything like that happened to Cane. I took him to a festival in town a few months back and there was a not so nice Afgan (on leash) who lunged at Cane and about gave me a heart attack. We turned and went the other direction. I seriously don't know what I would do if one was able to get to him. I'm sure he could hold his own but I don't ever want to find out.

There was another thread recently about invisible fences and I didn't know anything about them but now I see what everyone was talking about. What a scarey situation. I'm glad Guerin is okay. Tell Phil that we all think he did the right thing. Hopefully the neighbors will get this resolved soon.

So I guess it is just our bad luck, and oh well thats life, that this dog came thru his underground fence, and jumped on and attempted to INJURE our dog who was on his leash! . Their "containment" FAILED, the owners are aware of their dogs behavior, as I stated earlier in the thread, they come out and scream at their dogs to come in the house, if someone walks by. They are aware their dogs are becoming more and more aggressive behind that crummy fence, and lo and behold one decided to take the hit and come thru and attack our dog. They are darned lucky all their dog got was kicked and roughed up a bit by our dog. Next time a face full of bear spray will be its reward. And I would feel the same way if a dog came over ANY fence and attacked us, while we are out walking our leashed dogs. If people want to use these kinds of "containment" systems and they fail, they darned well be ready for the consequences. And once again, imagine if that had been our Rottweiler, who came thru that fence and attacked the lab on its leash? What do you think the outcome would have been? My bet, our Rottweiler would have been PTS! And for the record, our boys are supervised when in their fenced yard and are NEVER in the yard if we are not home. We also fenced the back yard, away from the public view. These people put the underground fence in the FRONT yard facing the street right at the edge of the sidewalk, instead of their very private backyard.
And to answer your question, if you know your dog can get over the fence he should never be out unsupervised.

Re: Attacked while biking

You're right this is what I would consider not a good use of this kind of fence. Mine backs up our physical fence that is in the back yard and people walking by don't even know we have dogs unless the dogs are inside and the people knock on the door. As I said before, he has jumped fences while being supervised! He dosen't even venture near the fence now, but he is still watched.

Ths should be more about properly training and containing a dog not about invisible fences in particular. Even if they had a physical fence up by the road this dog would still be a nuisance, so you're right they should rethink the way they are doing things and keep their dogs in the backyard where they cannot see people on the street and should NOT be left oustide unattended as some dogs will go through any fence if motivated enough.

I'm gald to hear everyone came out ok. Let's hope the bear spray works if it happens again. Something you should carry anyway as you never know when you might come across a loose dog.

Re: Attacked while biking

Well actually we started carrying the bear spray because of BEARS! And it has come in handy for loose aggressive dogs! I honestly don't think these dogs would be like they are if they were behind their home, away from the busy street or behind a wooden fence where they could not see and get themselves so worked up.
