Re: Attacked while biking

Shirley, what a scare! I'm glad Guerin and Phil both came away from it unharmed. In that situation, I would have given my dog the lead, too. It wouldn't be a better choice to restrict Guerin's ability to defend himself and possibly put Phil in harms way. I'm just glad no one got hurt.

They keep their dogs on lead and under control while outside the home. A "stupid fence" is just that.....stupid.

Re: Attacked while biking

I can only add that I believe Phil did exactly the right thing. Intentionally allowing your dog to remain restrained while under attack would be the wrong thing to do, IMO. That would be like being handcuffed while someone comes up and kicks the snot out of you! Guerin had to have the right to defend himself. I'm really glad neither of them was hurt and I hope you can find resolution to this problem.

Re: Attacked while biking

We've had lots of encounters with loose, sometimes semi-aggressive dogs when biking and my strategy has always been to just stop and let my dog face the bother, but this reminds me of one occasion when I did drop the lead because it was truly an attack and not just posturing. My big boy chased the villian all the way back into its house. Yes, their front door was open wide and they were standing in it. I did not follow, called the dog and he promptly returned looking quite satisfied. It never reoccured. No, it did not change his demeanor towards other dogs.

Re: Attacked while biking

Shirley, glad both the boys are ok, how scary it must have been!!! I think Phil did the only thing he could have by letting Gurin handle the situation until he was able to take over. My guess is that as level headed as Gurin is and with as much training as you both give him this incident will not translate into further dog aggression in his mind.

Re: Attacked while biking

When my friend gave me their undergroung fence and collar, that was still in the package, I thought it was going to be great. Then I found this website. It's still in the package and I guess it will be collecting some more dust. I don't feel comfortable in "taking the chance" with Casey.
I'm happy to hear that no one was hurt in the incident.

Re: Attacked while biking

Thanks for all the feedback. We will just relax and know that the training Guerin has will help keep him in check should he start to feel a bit big in the britches after his encounter. This is the first and I certainly hope the last time a dog actually attacks him. Phil is pretty disgusted with himself for not realizing that the lab was coming after Guerin until it was too late.
But things happen, they are both ok, and maybe we will luck out and these owners will rethink how they "contain" their dogs, if not, we know for sure the one will blow thru it, and the bear spray will be handy.

Re: Attacked while biking

Well, my boxer can get over a 10 ft fence, so I would like to know how I am supposed to "contain" him. You can hate the invisible fence, just remember they do have uses. Ours is also used to keep the dog out of the gardens, which just gives them a little more of a barrier from the physical fence which they have also been known to dig under.

Re: Attacked while biking

Good Grief! I would make it a point to continue to use the same route to the bike path so that any changes in Guerin's behavior can be addressed by Phil.

So glad everyone is all right! I have learned never to say never. The GSD we walk by everyday (the sidewalk is only on that side of the road) and runs along that dog's wire fence, was so worked up last week that when we walked by she forced her muzzle through the small wire opening and clipped Sonny in the side.

Talk about a shock! I always have a treat in my mouth during that portion of our walk so Sonny was walking in heel position and looking at my face. We've gotten to the point now that he totally ignores her and automatically will look at my face as we start to walk by the house.

Who knew that her head could get through such a small space but she was in such a frenzed state that she managed it. It made my dog jump and I definitely noticed the difference the next time we passed by the house so we had to work through it. Now, I just make sure I give my dog more distance from the fence so if she does try it again, she will not be able to reach him.

I can only imagine how Phil must have felt!

It sounds like your dog spends WAY too much time unsupervised outside. All the "containment" in the world will not solve the dog's boredom and his needs to be worked, exercised, and supervised.

You have an escape artist - you have to get creative. Fencing is only as good as it contains YOUR dog. You can place an angled-in section on top of your existing fence and this will contain even the most determined "jumper".

Electric underground fencing is a false sense of security and an accident just waitting to happen as evidenced by this thread.

Re: Attacked while biking

Where fencing runs right to the sidewalk, I do not walk my dogs by there. I don't care if it is the only sidewalk, there is a beside the road on the other side of the street.......

With the Boxer it sounds as if it is running loose. There are fixes for that. A fence topper, a hot wire on the fence or supervision when outdoors.

Re: Attacked while biking

I am so sorry to hear this has happened... It's hard to know if letting him defend himself was the 'right' thing to do... but I certainly wouldn't want to let my dog get beat up by another dog... Hopefully it has no effect on him :(

Our neighbors (w/ two lab puppies (almost 1 year)) just put up an electric fence... I was not too happy about that, but what can you do... it seems the dogs are only in the electric yard when someone is home... that's a good start...
