How long does your Rotty sleep?

I was wondering if a few people could chime in and tell me how much your Rotty sleeps each day (on average). Our pup is just about a year old and seems to be laying down and sleeping a lot more all of a sudden. I'm certainly not complaining that she's settling down a bit - - just wondering if it's normal. I'd guess that she sleeps 12-14 hours during a normal 24-hour period. Of course, if there's something exciting going on (other dogs visiting, etc.) she'll sleep much less.

Re: How long does your Rotty sleep?

Gee whiz, Cyrus sleeps a lot especially now with the weather so bad.

He goes to bed around 7:00 PM and sleeps until 4:30 AM. I assume he sleeps most of day while I am at work...he is always sleeping when I get home. If he comes to work with me he sleeps on my office sofa in between visits from staff and dorm residents and our lunch time walk along the Charles.

Cyrus is definitely like me...a morning dog.

Re: How long does your Rotty sleep?

our pup (1 year old also) sleeps for about 7 hrs at night with us, and naps during the day for an hour or so her and there. I would say that if you added it all up, it would be 10-12 hours a day. She is a VERY active dog, and she is near impossible to wear out.

Now Caesar, our Dogue de bordeaux, he sleeps about 18-20 hours a day!!! Eat, sleep, poop, what a life!!!

Probably about 18 hours a day. They sleep while we're gone, and in bed by nine. They're only active as long as the rest of the pack is doing something. If only I could get my youngest son to do that

Re: How long does your Rotty sleep?

I was just thinking about this the other day.
Athena sleeps all day while I'm gone (apprx. 8-4). When I get home, we play/run for a couple of hours. (apprx 1.5 hours) She takes a restless nap (or looks bored) while I study (apprx. 1 hour). She watches me cook. She plays with Andy when he gets home. She falls asleep at about 10 and wakes up with me at 6. I assume she goes back to sleep when I'm gone.
That's 17 hours!!!
Btw, she's almost 2.

Re: How long does your Rotty sleep?

Maggie sleeps most of the day while we're gone at work... any time I'm at home with her during the day she's crashed out on the couch or in her bed, so I'm figuring that's her normal day. Usually goes to bed when we do around 11 and then up at 6am for breakfast.

All in all I'd say she's asleep for about 17-18 hours a day.

Thanks everyone! That makes me feel better. Sounds like our Maggie's sleeping habits are pretty normal. :-)

Re: How long does your Rotty sleep?

My dog is maybe around two now. Not certain. Later this past summer he started sleeping more, which I thought was from the heat. But he's kept it up so I thinks it's part of the maturing process. We generally have about three hours of walking, running (him) and playing (tug, retrieve, chase) in morning, early evening and late night. He still likes a late night burst of activity before going into a dead-to-the-world sleep for the night. Almost every day includes a few short car rides because he likes to be with me for errands. We often have a visiting dog or go to my sister's house where he plays with her dogs but also uses a lot of energy running back and forth looking in the windows to be sure I'm still around. So, I'd say on the least active days he sleeps about 16 hours. A couple of days a week it may only be about 10 hours. He is always ready to get up and go do something.

I have to agree with this. As long as we are moving, she's moving. If we sleep, she sleeps and that includes an occasional nap.

Sometimes Toby only pretended to sleep. If I moved, or rustled a Potato Chip bag, he'd watch me with one little eye....

Re: How long does your Rotty sleep?

I would say she sleeps a minimum of 16 hrs a day. I don't know if shes in a deep sleep or resting for part of those hours.

That's our little darlings too - just get up and walk into the kitchen and they think 'Hey she's gonna get something to eat - maybe we'll get something too'.

Re: How long does your Rotty sleep?

According to our trainer, dogs pretty much sleep while you're sleeping or out. And on average, the sleep around 20 hours.

yeah.... my response to that was.... do you mind communicating that to the brat dog Tasha?

We put her in her crate around 10:30pm and hear activity (her let me out, I'm awake and demand attention noises which get ignored) around 5:30 am

She's in there during the day when we're at work. So on average I would say she sleeps around 16 hours MAX.

course, she's still a pup.

Re: How long does your Rotty sleep?

I have noticed alot with Khori (5 mo) that he sleeps alot. I take him to the store with me and we will go to the office, and he sleeps. Sometimes I have to wake him up in the morning at 10am. He will put himself to bed on occassions. When I don't need him as a demo, he goes into the kennel in the training center, and when I go to bring him out, alot of the time he is sleeping, so I let him sleep. I just don't want to burn him out by having him demo like 4 hours a day in classes. He is such a good boy in classes. He never fusses when I put him into his kennel, even after him playing the other dogs. But I have always put things in for him to chew on. I am so glad that I went with a Rottie instead of a Border Collie.
