| Questions possibly pregnant Rott I'm in a mess here and not sure what to do. My friend Nick is out of town until February 1st. He has a female Rottweiler that is 21 months old. He has her boarded at a kennel right now. I guess last night when the workers where cleaning runs and taking dogs out to go for a walk his dog got mixed up with another dog and his dog wound up in the wrong kennel. She wound up with another male dog but she isn't fixed and they think she is in heat. So anyways he called me and wanted to know if Dan or I could go pick her up and take her to the Vet to figure out what we could do. I'm supposed to pick her up tonite when Dan gets home from work. However I have called my Vet already to make her appointment and told him what is going on and I'm not sure what route to take here. According him these are my options: 1. I could wait 21 days to get a pregnancy test done. If positive then he could do a late term abortion on her but the shot would cause her to throw up, have diarrhea and she could lose bone marrow. 2. I could bring her in next week and have her spayed but he says Rottweilers run a risk of bone cancer when they are fixed. 3. I could just wait it out and if she is pregnant let her have the pups. I have talked to Nick about the options and he says he defintily couldn't handle puppies so to figure out which of the other two options comes with the has the least risk? He does dog agility with her and she is very well bred. He does not ever want to breed her but she isn't fixed yet because he has to wait until she is 24 months old according to his contract with the breeder. So anyhow my question is out of option 1 and 2 which runs the least risk. Thanks in advance |

| Re: Questions possibly pregnant Rott Have you talked to the breeder? I`m so sorry you are in such a horrible position. I would have her fixed right away since I was told that it would be less of a risk but you do have a contract as well so before I would do anything I would talk to the breeder. Good luck. |

| Re: Questions possibly pregnant Rott Immediate spaying would be best. She is old enough not to fall into that "early spay/neuter" category as far as osteo is concerned. That applies to pups who are still growing and developing their skeletal structure. |

| Re: Questions possibly pregnant Rott DanyP1...I don't know the breeder, She's not my dog. Nick bought her from California where he used to live. All I know about her is her parents are champs and she cost 1800. He has a Health guarantee on her and he has to wait till she is 24 months according to the contract. He does sports with her but not dog shows so he was planning on having her fixed anyways but was waiting because of his contract. He said he doesn't really care about the contract anymore because even if something happened with her he would not want to return her so getting her fixed now isn't a problem. This just sucks being the middle person here. I'm scared of making the wrong decision and her health is affected because of my decision. Thanks for the info. Judy..That's what I was thinking about doing. She has an appointment tomarrow morning at nine. He said he could fit her in on Thursday for a spay though he still doesn't think that's the best route. I think she's going to run a chance of cancer either way because ( I could be wrong) I think I have read that if you do not spay them they can get uterian (Is that how you spell it ) Cancer? |

| Re: Questions possibly pregnant Rott Oh this is going back in my memory bank soo far,,,but years ago I had a GSD who had go "takin" by a neighbor dog. This young girl had been hit by a car and her pelvic bones were broke form the accident...anyway my vet gave her an injection to abort the pups if any. I have no clue if this is still used...but it might be a choice

| Re: Questions possibly pregnant Rott I would have your friend call the breeder. I am quite sure they will agree to a spay. Spay is the best thing to do atthis point, especially since he wants to do that anyway Additionally (and I speak from a boarding kennel manager's point of view) the KENNEL is responsible for the vet bill because THEY are the ones that made this problem occur. I can not even imagine this happening here. Bitches in heat go out with NO ONE and they certainly don't go for walks with other dogs. They are let out into a secure area for exercise and put back into their own pen Intact males go out with no one else unless they are boarding with a housemate or they are under 12 months old This is an inexcusable accident and is very negligent

They are let out into a secure area for exercise and put back into their own pen That's the other thing that is ticking me off but I thought I would let Nick deal with that when he gets back. They said they just hired a few new girls and they didn't know the rules, They offered to pay for half of the bill (I asked them if they would pay for it otherwise it is up to us until Nick gets home and I thought it would set with Dan a little easier). Then on top of that she wants me to sign a form saying I will hold her harmless which i don't think I could do anyway since I am not the owner. I'm trying to wait for Dan to get home because he could deal with that crap a little better than I can but it's already 6 and I have to have her picked up no later than 8 o clock. I really wish I didn't have to deal with this right now. My dad just got out of the hospital after being there for a week for heart problems. Nick has only been in Ohio for a little over a year so he doesn't know a whole lot of other people out here so that's why I'm trying to help him out but I'm about stressed to my limit. |

| Re: Questions possibly pregnant Rott Oh yeah her reason for only paying for half is because nobody SAW THEM MATING, But if a dog is in heat and is around a male what are they going to do? Not wait for someone to watch?!? |

| Re: Questions possibly pregnant Rott It sounds as if you are talking about a breeder who cares enough to have a contract and I am sure they would rather a bitch of their breeding NOT be involved in a singularly inappropriate encounter and resulting litter. Especially since the dog was sold with the understanding that she was not going to be bred anyway. Dan should pick up the phone immediately when he gets home and talk to the breeder and let them know why he wants to spay her a bit earlier than initially agreed upon. |

| Re: Questions possibly pregnant Rott Absolutely do NOT sign anything that holds them harmless. I'm a kennel manager and their whole story is balon They put a bitchin heat in with an intact male This makes them liable for negligence. They are liable for the entire spay bill no ifs ands or buts Get them tosign a note syingthat they will and do NOT sign anything that says you received the dog in good condition or otherwise lets them off the hook |

He is in California right now which is where he bought the Rottweiler. Diane Thank you very much for your advice it helps out alot!!!! I won't sign anything. I will keep everyone up to date on her, We are leaving now to go pick her up. Do I need to keep her and Daphne seperated for any reason. | Re: Questions possibly pregnant Rott If she is in season, you might want to keep them seperate as when bitches are in season they often fight with another bitch when they would not normally do so. Got your "guys" mixed up. |

| Re: Questions possibly pregnant Rott She didn't want to release her to us until we signed her form. Dan told her we were leaving with the dog and weren't signing anything. She told Dan he was over reacting that they were "Just Dogs" and he told her if she thought they were "Just Dogs" maybe she shouldn't be in the market to make money of them. Then she finally went in the back and got Holly and told us to get off her property. |
