Re: Questions possibly pregnant Rott

Good for you guys..... I'm of the same oppinion as Diane, Ive managed a boarding kennel for a bit over a year now and there is absolutely NO WAY something like that would happen there, NO WAY.... It is complete negligence on their part.

she is definitely in heat...She is really swollen back there. The dogs have their own Couch and it has a cover on it so if she springs a leak it can be easily cleaned up..lol

Good for you!

Please keep us posted. Kennel owners/managers like that give boarding kennels a bad name. Cate and I :) work hard to make clients and dogs happy, people like that should be in some other business

Re: Questions possibly pregnant Rott

Yeah after this situation with them I am very thankful my parents always watch my dogs when I need to go out of town and can't take them. I have heard of other people having problems with them before but I had never dealt with them until now. I live out in the country and they are the only kennel around so I think people get in a bind like Nick did and they have no choice but that kennel. Nick is going though a Divorce and got a four day notice to be in California (from Ohio) for his hearing.

Re: Questions possibly pregnant Rott

what a shame....not responsible for the kennel to put dogs together without checking if in season, intact, sick or dog aggressive.hope all turns out ok.
contact the breeder as soon as possible to see if ok to just go ahead and spay...preferably once the bleeding part stops, they bleed less in surgery.
but whatever you do, avoid the mis mate shot aka abortion shot...that can have serious side effects including pyometra and bone marrow suppression.
good luck!

Re: Questions possibly pregnant Rott

The Kennel is in Ohio close to the Indiana/Ohio border.

Holly is scheduled to get fixed Thursday Morning. I'm scared to death something is going to happen to her at the Vets and I'm going to get blamed for it. I'm worried about her getting away from the Vet or not waking up for the medicine. I get like this everytime I have to take a dog to Vets and leave them. I'm sure she will be alright though.

Nick did get ahold of the Breeder and she called me to check on her. She wants her to go ahead and get spayed and will call again on Friday to see how her spay went. She wanted the kennels number and I gave it to her. I guess i shouldn't of done that because the kennel called and left a message for me and a message for Nick on his cell phone telling us to quit talking about their business to others or they would sue us for deflamation of character and loss of revenue (Oops). I didn't know you couldn't do that.

I have been having a problem getting her to eat. She really misses Nick alot. Daphne (to my surprise) has even tried to cheer her up by giving holly her favorite rope. I think she is coming out of Heat now because she isn't swollen back there anymore I'm not sure how all that works really. Daphne is my first female and she only had one heat cycle before she was fixed and I don't remember much about her heat cycle.

I will post an update on her Thursday when I pick her up.

Re: Questions possibly pregnant Rott

Telling the facts as they are is NOT defamation of character and while they could try to sue you for it, they wouldn't get anywhere and would waste a lot of money. Telling someone in California (the breeder) about a kennel in Ohio is not going to lose them an appreciable amount of business. BS idle threats from a scared, obnoxious kennel owner. She should be profusely apologizing to you, Nick and the breeder.

Sounds like you're handling everything beautifully, keep your chin up!

Re: Questions possibly pregnant Rott

if she is scheduled on thursday, and drop off is in the am(like at my job), remember, do not feed after midnight the night before, when you drop off, talk to the vet, ask any questions you might have.most clinics now a days do pre op blood work and put them on fluids during surgery and they do just fine.
when in heat, some bitches also get a bit picky...she is also stressed because nicks not home, and the kennel stress.
usually the heat cycle lasts 21-27 days.starts by swelling, then bleeding, swelling starts to diminish, ready to be bred, then all is over.(average bitch).most are ready somewhere around the 11th to the 16th day from first day they start bleeding...but it varies..just like us!

Re: Questions possibly pregnant Rott

This is a shame. I do not fully understand if the bitch was sold as a pet, why she could not have been spayed before her first heat? I can't help but think that the breeder wanted her intact so that she could be bred at a later date? To leave a pet intact leaves the door open for accidents. Even if she had not gotten mixed up in the wrong kennel, the fact that she was in heat could have been disasterous in itself. Males have clawed there way through kennels & fencing to get to bitches in heat & she could have been bred through the fencing itself. I too would opt for spaying the bitch at this point.

Re: Questions possibly pregnant Rott

She hasn't been spayed yet because it's in the contract not to spay until 24 months of age. She has an awesome breedr I talked to her for the first time the other night and she is really informative and you can tell she cares alot for her puppies. She said she does have some pet quality rotts when she breeds and sells they on a contract for spay/nueter but had had some problems with dogs being fixed to young so she changed the contract from 6 months to 24 months. She said she has been breeding for 19 years and has had 9 litters. Holly is her H litter. Not sure what an H litter is but I guess that's what she is. She defintily doesn't want Holly breed, I can tell from talking to her that's not her intention. She said she keeps puppies for show but Holly is a masculian female and didn't think she'd do well in the ring so she sold her as pet quality on a spay contract. Next time Nick goes to California Holly and Nick are going to stay with Holly's Breeder. She said she would love to see her again.

I do have one question? When you take dogs to be fixed does the Vet take them outside to go to the bathroom? I have this fear of them taking her outside and her bolting from them. My vet doesn't have a fenced in area for dogs to go potty. The way Holly has been acting I think if the chance arose I believe she would take off to try and find Nick. This is the first time they have been seperated from each other. Nick takes her to work with him, so they are never seperated.

Re: Questions possibly pregnant Rott

Targon Rotts...Thanks for the info. I was told not to feed or water her after 10 pm on Wednesday and Drop her off in between 8- 9 am on Thursday morning. I don't know if I sound stupid here but I was hoping to take her out here once or twice before taking her to the Vets and then telling them not to take her outside because I'm scared she would take off from them. If you tell the Vet not to take them outside that would be alright wouldn't it?

Re: Questions possibly pregnant Rott

Maureen,
Many knowlegeable people prefer that any desexing take place after physical maturity. This makes a considerable difference regarding spay incontinence and is also discovered to be a possible influence on osteo and other skeletal provisions. The fact that this particular girl ended up in this unfortunate situation does not change the fact that later desexing has many advantages. She is simply being spayed sooner than planned.

Re: Questions possibly pregnant Rott

you should be able to talk to your vet and express any concern/question.
many vets walk the dogs outside to relieve themselves before surgery.here we have an enclosure, but you can express your thoughts, whether you want to go by and walk her before,or to take extra caution that she can be an escape artist.
yes, ther are many advantages to her being spayed now.no more heat worries,no ovarian/uterine tumors,no pyometria, less cancer risk...at this age about 85% less-reproductive/uterine tract kinds.
and...now nick can enter all agility trials without worrying about bitch in season having to cancel!
trust me that's a biggie!i got 2 intact and i lose quite a bit of entries!
good luck!
