Re: Dog Licenses: Unofficial Poll

Okay - here's an additional question:

How many of you have ever been asked to show proof of a current license? By who?

I was asked once - but the evaluator for my CCGC and they retained the certificate until I provided proof. I've never been asked by any bylaw official.

Although - up where my parents live - the bylaw officer used to stop by about once a year. That seems to be a rural phenomenon. I've never seen / heard it happening in the city (which seems to feed into what lblax said about enforcement).

Re: Dog Licenses: Unofficial Poll

I always licensed Toby becauee it was the right thing to do. My $$ just paid for the By-Law enforcement officers to harrass us. I have been followed home by their van and stopped outside my front door by officers "just checking" dog tags...I've been followed into parks and spied on by an officer waiting to see if I'd let Toby off-leash....Why should I pay for that kind of treatment?? Enforcement officers should follow up complaints...not follow people around and onto their property....

One time a neighbour tied his Lab up outside Starbucks. He was actually sitting outside at a table, and you can imagine the fight that ensued when a By-law officer tried to untie his dog and take it away!!There was a riot!!!

I would rather wait in line at a soup kitchen than have the job of a By-Law control officer.

Smile Re: Dog Licenses: Unofficial Poll

Hi all:

Nope..none of my Rotties are, with the exception of my first Rottweiler in '92 have been licensed with the City of Toronto.

I was always too paranoid that listing my breed on the license could cause trouble for me in the future. If I was forced to license my dogs, I would list 'mixed-breed'...

I've also never seen animal control in over 13-years of taking my dogs to local parks. They may drive around, but don't bother getting out of their vehicle, unless you are in violation of the leash law. (My park is offleash from 6 p.m. and on...)

I also do not vaccinate...at all. My dogs haven't been vaccinated in years. They get one rabies vax @ 4-mons, and that's it.

Dianna

PS Still managed to get my CGN's with HABAC

Re: Dog Licenses: Unofficial Poll

Here, if your dog gets loose you have to prove it's licensed to get it back if it's in a shelter. If not licensed there's a fine.

If you walk your dog and are seen and the police know you are not on their list of licensed dogs (they often look out of curiosity) you are fined

If you adopt a dog from many rescues, they want proof you licensed your dog (at least the first year you have it)

If you've previously licensed a dog and then don't the town checks to see why. If you are purposely avoiding it there's a fine

If your dog gets a Rabies vax at the vet, the vets are required to send a copy of the certificate to the town. If you fail to license the dog there's a fine :) No sneaking anymore here

Re: Dog Licenses: Unofficial Poll

Out of 5 dogs, 3 are licensed 2 are not. Why? Because I have 1 pit/Cane Corso mix and a Dogo Argentino that I just rescued. Those two are not licensed because I did not want to arouse any suspicions. There is quite a stigma with their type of breed and I didn't want to draw more attention to myself. They are all current with their shots and so on AND I already pay through the nose with my homeowner's insurance for having 3 rotties.

Re: Dog Licenses: Unofficial Poll

Currently own two dogs, both licensed.

My reason for licensing is the opposite of some of you. It is to help in the fight against BSL. You see, every time I hear bite statistics quoted in my area, they give an average bite ratio of bite per breed using licensed dogs to provide the number of a particular breed in an area. I figure if I can provide two rotties to their pool who aren't involved in dog bite incidents, it will help lower the ratio.

Re: Dog Licenses: Unofficial Poll

All mine are licensed except Logan and it too is because the unaltered dog lisence is outrageous. He will most likely be neutered after he turns a year old and will be licensed at that time, it will be 3 year license then too as he will have gotten a 3 year rabies vaccine.

I was checked a the local dog park once, but we rarely go there anymore. They don't acutally have the records with them to look things up, so I figure I can claim that Logan is licensed since the rest are they might believe me. At the park they wrote down all the names and addresses of the people who didn't have licenses.

Re: Dog Licenses: Unofficial Poll

I've had to show my dog's licenses in the following instances:
First time boarding at the kennel
When taking the CGC test
When taking the evaluation test for Delta Society Pet Partners
When registering for Obedience classes
When signing up to volunteer at the nursing home for pet therapy
When I adopted Maddy from the SPCA, I had to show that my other dog was licensed.

Re: Dog Licenses: Unofficial Poll

never requested to show a lic. yet. I take the pup everywhere with me, and the only reason people stop her and I, is so they can pet the cute little pup!

Re: Dog Licenses: Unofficial Poll

The county I reside in does have a license requirement. The fine for 1 dog is $180. I would much rather pay for the license's than a fine if any of them should ever "escape" my yard. My yard is fenced, and they do have secure kennels as well. Ha just a footnote here.......all the dogs have been in the house this winter. I do get a Kennel license from the County Court House. All the breeds are listed Rottweiler and Bulldogs. Even though I have the Rotties spayed and neutered I still list them with the kennel thing. IF BSL EVER HAPPENS HERE.......I will fight to the end to PROVE these dogs are good citzens.

Re: Dog Licenses: Unofficial Poll

I just don't think the whole "I'll hide my dog if there's ever BSL" thing will ever work. Unless you plan to never bring your dog out in public again for the rest of its life, there's always going to be some jerk who will tattle on you. I know several former Pit Bull owners who live in Prince George's County, MD who thought they would do just that. That is until the Animal Control van rolled up to their house and took their dogs away.

Re: Dog Licenses: Unofficial Poll

We have 2 dogs, Link has always been licensed til now(thanks for the reminder for '05, I will stop tonight!). Layla was microchipped when we adopted her from the Humane Society so we don't have to license her, when they have a clinic this summer Link will be chipped also. We have never been asked to prove it but try to take every precaution to avoid problems with law enforcement including licenses. Of course, it sounds like we are lucky here in PA cause an unneutered male is only $8 (neutered is $6).
