| Collar for a new pup? I'll be getting a new pup in about 3 weeks. When my current rott was a puppy I used a flat leather collar on him all the time. He developed that "collar line" around his neck and I want to avoid that with this new puppy for show purposes. The new pup will probably not be wearing any collar in the house except when necessary for training...of course he'll have one on when we go outside. Which collar type will be the least likely to give that damn "collar line". Thanks...Skip

| Re: Collar for a new pup? I always hated that collar line as well. Diesel isnt a show dog, but I always wear a choker chain on him, but never use it as a choker, just like a normal collar. I like the looks of them and well he's turning two and no collar lines.

| Re: Collar for a new pup? For tag collars, which I only put on when leaving the house, I use those not-much-bigger than a piece of string slip collars and turn them into non-slip collars. That is done by after turning them into a regular slip, then take the whole collar portion and run it through the live ring. Pull tight and you have it. It will not leave a collar line as it does not break haircoat. I never use these with a leash attached as they must be long enough to slide over the head. With the little bitty guys I use the smallest buckle type that will fit around their neck but I don't use collars at all around the house. |

| Re: Collar for a new pup? Ben and Baron got brand new rolled leather collars shortly after we adopted Baron. Ben only wears his when we leave the house (not in the backyard), but Baron wears his whenever we're not home just in case he decides to make a hole in the fence ...he doesn't wear it when we're home, or at night. When he wore it 24/7 for the first month he was with us, he did have a little bit of a collar line on his neck, but now that he is in 'stealth mode' without a collar on all the time, the line is going away. He gets brushed around the neck when I take the collar off of him... We got them at Care-A-Lot Pets in Virginia Beach when Doug went down for a long weekend - here is a link to the collars on their website: Care-A-Lot-Pets Pretty reasonable prices, and I love the collars!! |

Judy, what do you use those tag collars for when leaving the house if you never use a leash on them? Do you just use them during transport in a vehicle? Or is this a 2nd collar that you use?

| Re: Collar for a new pup? I use nylon collars with the quick/snap release. I find that if you don't leave the collar on, you dont get the line, no matter what type of collar you're using. I love the Lupine collars, they're quite colorful and guaranteed for life against everything (including chewing!!!).

| Re: Collar for a new pup? The tag collar is for ID purposes only. Sort of like carrying ID when you go jogging - you still wear pants (or do you?). They don't leave the house/yard without them. Everyone is chipped but should I get hit by a car and knocked unconscious when we are biking or walking, someone doesn't need a chip reader to see where we belong. Ditto in car or whatever. Leaving the house, put cleanup sack in pocket, throw on tag collar, put on chain slip collar for leash (or itty bitty buckle for baby). I also leave that tag collar on when the dogs are crated at the shows. Just pull it off when I take the dog out of the crate and we're good to go. |
