Albino?

The wife and I were talking and the question of Albino rottie was raised. Has anyone ever seen one, either in the flesh or picture?
The second question was are they better to see at night?

Although Vitaglio (which has nothing to do with the Albino factor) is seen in the Rottweiler, albinoism is not. I don't understand you question about see at night at all.

Re: Albino?

Sorry about my sense of humour....we live in a small Yorkshire country village. Walking the dogs is done in almost total darkness and even with a torch its hard to spot the rottie.

Re: Albino?

The whole point of a black guard dog is so it can sneak up on the malfactor. I was laughing about the seeing at night myself, because if I read it "can the dog see better", most albinos have vision and hearing problems so I was going to say you're lucky if they can see at all!

I have some little flashing light things that I attach to the collars of my dogs when we are in the mountains where there is no light at all. Before I got those I used to tie a white hankerchief to their collars, whether in the city or out as we walk in the roadways so it made it easier for them to be spotted.

Re: Albino?

Some of the SAR teams around here have these REALLY cool collars that light up at night. Not obnoxiously bright, but they rather glow, so you can see where the dog is working. Still haven't commenced my search for said collars but would love to have some someday.

Re: Albino?

Gretchen, I found those collars but at almost $20 each I decided I liked the hankerchiefs better!

However, those little strobe things are about $3.00 and can be found at many Ace Hardware stores. They are called "Pet Strobe" and are made by CMI (made in China) and guaranteed for 5 years. Can't beat that.

Re: Albino?

Guerin has a collar that when turned on glows red. Makes him really visable at night. It just looks greenish yellow when it is turned off. We found it at Petsmart for 15 bucks! We use it an tiny little lights that you can see a mile away, but when those die the strobe thingys will be looked for!

Re: Albino?

I have a couple of these discs that were part of a promo for Goldschlager liqueur. . It sounds like the Pet Strobe that JudiW described.
The disc is 2" in diameter, has a clip on the back, and with a press of a small button, it pulses out a flash of red light. It has worked great attached to the top of the dog's collar when out on a night hike.

Re: Albino?

Ah, the beautiful setting for James Herriott's tales of being a vet in the English countryside. Is Skipton near Darrowby? Herriott was incredibly descriptive; and actually put the reader, or at least this reader, right in the midst of things. I have all of his books and treasure them.
Best wishes!

Re: Albino?

Hate to tell you this but, Darrowby is a fictitious place. He used Thirsk as the setting for the village in the book.

Very true though about Herriots writing style. If you ever get chance and can find them on dvd, All Creatures Great and Small the televised version (not the film, but the many episodes with Christopher Timothy as James Herriott)
Thirsk is about 60 miles away from us.

I knew that! I was just playing along with his idea, that's why I put the wink icon in there!
One of our public tv stations periodically runs the episodes. I still think the books are better then the series though!
Best wishes -
