"Ultimate Dogs"

Did anyone see Trish B on I think it was the Outdoor Life Network (OLN) on Sunday afternoon? THey had a show called "Ultimate Dogs" and the theme was Top 10 dogs with the worst reputations. The Rottweiler came in at #5! Wow I thought it was going to be higher than that. It shows that people are slowly changing their perceptions of our breed. Not a signle negative thing said about them, cept that they arent the breed for a first time dog owner because of size and strength. THey showed Parker sniffing out the trails, and talked about how he's involved in SAR.

It was a great positive blurb, WTG TRISH!!

Re: "Ultimate Dogs"

Hi all,

Yes - it was Parker and I. I'm proud of our part and how the Rottweilers were represented. I'm also good friends with Cassie Levy and her two dogs Dylan (RTD) and Emma. Parker had a blast at the shoot as it took over 4 hours (even though we were only on it for all of 90 seconds). Oh yeah - the man we found was my father.

I'm disappointed however in the overall show - as it really just sat on the fence - neither confirming nor denying claims. I was hoping to send it to some politicians - but it isn't strong enough to do so.

Yes, it was the Outdoor Life Network, Ultimate Dogs.

Re: "Ultimate Dogs"

I see what you mean. Although, I saw it as positive. The show focused on the working abilities of each breed, the positive flipside to why they can become bad pets. THey illustrated character strengths typical to each breed, with interviews from various experts.

All is not lost. Lets hope those in general who caught the show, that it shed some light on the true nature of the Rottweiler.

Even though my parents LOVE my dog, and know he's got a sound temperament, itimpressed them to see how smart these dogs really are, and what they can acheive.

Re: "Ultimate Dogs"

Actually - it was the top 10 most perceived aggressive breeds. They were as follows:

10) Chow Chow
9) Great Pyrenees
8) Bull Mastiff
7) Akita
6) Cane Corso (Italian)
5) Rottweiler
4) Cao De Fila Miguel (Portugal)
3) Dogo Agentino (Argentenia)
2) Preso Canario
1) American Pit Bull Terrier

Glad I could help.

I really see what our dogs do as a testament to their working ethic - the key to their breed. A dog with a good working ethic will tie themselves into knots if they think that is what you want. Parker is happiest when he feels he's making me happy. The more I ask of him - the happier he is.

It's the bidability, the willingness, the drive to achieve - THAT to me is what makes a Rottweiler. The fact that they're in this wonderful packaging which makes that all possible is the icing on the cake.

Of course, that being said is what makes our breed a 'non-entry level dog' in Cassie Levy's words. Without knowing how to direct that will, what is the best way to harness it, giving them positive means to use their abilities - is what makes our dogs very hard to own in the wrong situations. Being dogs, they cannot choose what we would like them to do - and do to extremes in some cases.

All in all, I'm happy with how I represented our breed. It's difficult, because you're always worried that your words will be taken out of context. It makes many people not want to appear at all. But the public perception of our breed won't improve unless we do take these chances to expose them. Get them out there. Show their talents. Prove that they are incredible, wonderful dogs that people should love to have in their communties. It's worth the risk for the betterment of our breed. IMHO

No Doberman on the list? Wow, that is shocking, but great.

Re: "Ultimate Dogs"

No G.Shepherds either, but you see people see them as police dogs, they must be good.

Re: "Ultimate Dogs"

Yes - I freely admit that I have no idea of how this list was gathered. Joe Public wouldn't have the foggiest idea of 4 of the 10 breeds listed. I offered to refer them to a German Shepherd and a Belgian (Malinois) that are also training in SAR - but they didn't want them as they weren't on their list.

How they arrived at this list? I have no idea.

The reason you noted is exactly why I didn't question it. Public perception is what gets some of these dogs in trouble, and is why that one is not.

Re: "Ultimate Dogs"

SOmeone recently told me that the #1 biting dog in the world, is the GSD. I always thought it to be the Lab, only due to numbers. I guess there are a lot of GSD around the world. Where does this information come from when these sort of statements are made?

Re: "Ultimate Dogs"

Wow, I can see why you would think that. Have you looked at the number of labs registered AKC as opposed to other dogs. You would think it would have to be. Of course, labs are generally nice tempered. I have only met a few that were not friendly.

I don't think I've ever met an unfriendly Rottweiler.

I always heard it was the cocker spaniel, but since no one died from it, they don't raise as much of a stink. Unfortunately, I also can't remember where the information came from..
