| Re: "Ultimate Dogs" I did a quick search in LexisNexis, and found this transcript from NPR's Talk of the Nation. This is from 2001 after the tragic Whipple case (mauled outside her home), and they discussed BSL, genetics, bite incidents, etc with Phil Matier and Nicholas Dodman. I have the entire thing if anyone wants it, but here is the relevant part:
Dr. DODMAN: Also, we tend to be talking about, you know, the hideous, you know, dog bite mortality situations, which are, you know, very extreme death or near-death situations, but if you go back to the epidemic, which is dog biting, our dear old German shepherd is the number one. And I think a lot of those people don't buy the German shepherd because it's a machismo dog or they're machismo people. And the number two is the chow. And the number three is the golden retriever. And number four is the cocker spaniel. I mean, these are dog owners who just don't know what they're doing. And they get a dog and perhaps the man in the house sort of says, 'Hey, good for you,' when the dog barks when it's a puppy. They don't know to train away from territorial protection. They don't know how to train a dog not to bite. They just don't know how to manage a dog. And they should have to set a driver's test before they get a dog. And there should be penalties if they don't follow the directions.
