Invisable fence

I have a bit of a problem. The town ordinance says I cannot have a fence taller than 4 feet and that it must be at least 50% see thru. Since he can see thru the fence there's nothing stopping Clifford from seeing something and jumping the fence to get it. I'm considering Invisable fence because while it has the same weaknesses as a physical fence (can see thru it and jump over it) the shock involved should be more of a deterrant to running past it than the effort to jump over a physical fence.

I've read the threads here regarding this and understand that most people here don't like these fences but most of the things people don't like about invisable fence are the same with a physical fence that meets town ordinance. The only argument against it I've found that is valid in my case is that it doesn't keep people and animals out of my yard and while I agree with this, I would think that a (currently) 60lb Rottweiler would be sufficient to keep people and animals out of my yard when he's out and when he's not out, I really don't care since there's nothing stopping them now.

My question is whether or not there's any additional liability with this type of fence and whether or not there's any risk to the dog other than the story I read about the person who left the collar on all of the time and the spot where the prongs touched the neck got infected.

Thank you.

Re: Invisable fence

Since you cannot have higher than 4 foot, I would think this would be as close as you can come to making that safe. Set the wire in from the fence about 4 feet. Unless trained to jump the almost a meter heigth, most dogs would hoist themselves over a 4 footer rather than taking off and clearing it. Teaching him to stay back about 4 feet should stop that. Also, keeping him back from the fence will also deter someone from reaching over.

Re: Invisable fence

I agree you will need to put in both a physical fence and an Invisible fence. You wouldn't want a problem with children or other pets wandering into your yard...I think liability would be an issue...I have found these fences to work beautifully...only problem I've seen so far has been the owner forgetting to remove the shock-collar before they take the dog out and having it zapped for no reason...I tried touching the collar once to see what it felt like and I nearly dropped to my knees!! I can see how they work VERY quickly at containing your dog...

Re: Invisable fence

I use it inside my fence to keep the dogs away from the fence as well as to keep them out of the garden areas in the yard. It works perfectly. I have one - the boxer - who would jump the fence to get into the neighbors yard. The invisible fence keeps him from doing that. I ran it along the bottom of the fence to keep them from gettting close to the fence, I then looped it back along the top of the fence - just in case. You need to keep the 2 strands of wire 5 feet apart so they don't cancel eachother out. I have collars on the beagle, rott and boxer. The beagle has very high prey drive outside and even a cat in the garden area won't get her to cross the line. I always take the collars off inside the house, just to be safe, it also keeps them from getting pressure necrosis from the prongs.

Re: Invisable fence

do the electric fence's accualy work ?? where i live i cant have a fence period so me and Jordan go on lots of long walks

i have been thinking of getting one but have been hesitant to use any kind of "shock" device as i think its a bit on the inhumane side ?

Re: Invisable fence

The invisible fence is only there to keep the dog back from the actual physical fence. Please do not use an invisible fence alone without a real fence. That is not safe.

Re: Invisable fence

If you want more detail on why not, you can do a search, but the quick answer is that it doesn't keep anyone or any other animals out and also, a Rottweiler will run through one if it is excited without a blink of an eye.

Re: Invisable fence

oh i know the reasons why not 1. here to many people let their dogs out without fences or leashes (one dog has challenged jordan twice) and jordan bless his heart all he wanted to do was play tail a waggin and all
its not that i would just put him out in the electric fence and go back in im not that dumb :) or atleast i try not to be. id be out to but i still have serious reservatons about it so im not going to we'll just keep doing the 2 to 3 mile walks twice a day besides its not hurting either of us to get into shape
