New puppy supply list?

Looks like I'm going to get a new pup in about 7 weeks. I have one male rott (Rocky...5 years old). I'm starting my list of everything I'm going to need before the puppy (a male) arrives. I'd like suggestions on everything that you think I should have. I'll be driving to a dog show this saturday just in order to buy stuff from the vendors. Any and all suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks....Skip

Re: New puppy supply list?

I just got my puppy recently, heres what I got her first:

a CRATE
leash and collar
little boots (I'm in Michigan)
bowls
Tag with her name phone and address
some chew toys
A furry little stuffed animal
a small blanket/bed thing for her crate

I think that was all on my first trip, some things (nail clippers, puppy shampoo, etc.) I already had. Good idea with having the list though, I went straight to the pet store and qound up spending oodles of money on "unnecessary" items, lol

Re: New puppy supply list?

MORE CHEWIES!
Puppy tugs.
Lots of small toys that can be easily carried in pockets or stuffed in waistbands, to trade for your pant leg/shoelaces/arm or whatever.

Post Re: New puppy supply list?

What I really found helpful when we got our new pup in May was a small crate. This I put him in at night and placed beside my side of the bed...and when he cried I would just stick my hand through and reassure him. He was a great pup and I never had to get up during the night with him. Last pee was about 10 p.m. and we got up early about 5-5:30 a.m., but much better then getting up during the night.

Also someone suggested to me to take a stuffed animal with me when we went to pick him up. We bought a Lamb Man, and rubbed momma dog and some of the puppies with it...and kept it with him. Baxter is almost 9 months old now and still loves his Lamb Man and he has not wrecked it.

Lots of chewies are a must...I think we had mostly compressed rawhides, and rope toys too. Small training treats that are easy to chew to start rewarding right away for peeps and poops outside.

The thing you will need the most of is......lots of patience.

Gina

Re: New puppy supply list?

Well alot of this you may have because of him not being your first but this is what Rottweilers for Dummies says.

Paneled fence partition or pen to cordon off a living area for the puppy.
Fiberglass kennel crate or metal wire cage
Feeding bowls and water dishes
Food prescribed by the breeder
Brushes, combs, nail clippers
Doggy quick bath
Special dog shampoo
Collars and leashes
Toys
Houshold odor neutralizer and cleaners
Chewing deterrents

Doggy First Aid Kit

Activated charcoal tablets
Adhesive tape (1- and 2-inch widths)
Antibacterial ointment (for skin and eyes)
Antihistamine (approved by your vet for allergic reaction)
Athletic sock (to slip over injured paw)
Bandages and dressing pads (gauze rolls, 1- inch 2-inc widths)
Blanket (for moving an injured dog or warming)
Cotton Balls
Diarrhea Medicine
Dosing syringe
Eyewash
Emergency phone numbers (taped on the cover of the first aid kit)
Hydrogen peroxide (3 percent solution)
Ipecac syrup (to induce vomiting)
Nylon stocking (to use as a muzzle)
Petroleum jelly
Pliers or tweezers (for removing stings, barbs, and quills)
Rectal thermometer
Rubber gloves
Rubbing alcohol
Scissors (preferably with rounded tips)
Touriquet kit
Syringe (without needle, for administering oral medications)
Towel
Tweezers

(Do you all actually have these kits? wow... its really an intimidating list.)

Re: New puppy supply list?

<sigh> Admittedly, my first aid kit is smaller.
(I also carry eye quality saline solution, for rinsing out eyes and wounds. Instead of eyewash and peroxide.)

Re: New puppy supply list?

Congrats on the new puppy Skip! How exciting!

Akasha's favorite toy when I first brought her home was a puppy kong. It was great for distracting her when she was attatched to my pant legs.
