Lightbulb How long to walk question?

My Reno is 1 year old And I was wondering what would be a good exercise routine for him at this age?

Re: How long to walk question?

Any problems with his hips or anything like that? If not, I should think at that age you could easily walk twice a day for a half hour each time. I try and go at least 30 minutes with my 3 year old, but we only make it once a day so I try and shoot for longer - like an hour. I know my walking pace is not nearly fast enough for him, so......

If I'm on my bike, then 20 to 40 minutes once a day fast paced is what we usually wind up doing. I can assure you mine could do that 2 and 3 times a day, but alas, I have to work.

Oh, and I don't believe running your dog is recommended until 2 years of age? Maybe someone will chime in here and clarify.

Re: How long to walk question?

I kept Toby mostly on-leash and didn't let him really run until he was two years old...after that I built him up and worked him pretty hard. He got one hour in the AM...one hour in the Afternoon and one to two hours "power walking" at night.I've never run him behind a bike, but my old roommate used to jog with him for a half hour here and there....he refused to run more than a half hour with her and would just put on the brakes...!!I would be hesitant to let him run or play hard until he is at least two...some people even wait longer!(and no jumping out of trucks or off high places either!)

Re: How long to walk question?

Using your good judgment and watching your pup to see how they are doing is a good way to go. Each dog will be a little different and require more or less exercise.
Our 1 y/o pup walks with me for about 1 hour every morning. If I miss a day, she gets a little over active at night. I also walk very quickly, we cover about 4 miles in an hour!
Try going easy at first, and if the pup still has a lot of energy left to burn, then go a little longer, or move a little faster.
One work of caution though, the more exercise they get, the more endurance they will build, so you walks will have to get longer as you go.
I am starting to now walk at night as well. Her morning walks keep her happy through the day, but at night she has lots of energy to spare. So it is either another walk or 30-45 min of traning after dinner.

Have fun!

Re: How long to walk question?

Mine have all been able to do an hour or so, (equivalent to 4 miles, here too!) at a year. That's great because that's about my limit. The pup is 6 months and easily does 30-40 minutes (equiv to 2-2.5 miles). Initially, there were walks around the block...2 blocks etc. Then, we started her at 15-20 min at 4 mos, then 20-30 min at 5 mos. Of course we obtained our vets opinion first.

Yes...they do increase their stamima. The more you do the more they'd like.
