Puppy Question?

Hello,
How old should a Puppy be when it's no longer appropriate to carry him or her?
I have a 7week old male rottie and just wanted to know. Also he has a collar that fits him just right with a two finger gap between his collar and his neck. The other day I was petting him on the side of his neck on the inside of his collar and he growled with his teeth showing, like he didn't like that one bit and wanted it stopped. I told him to stop in a stern voice and he did. I did the same thing again and he didn't growl. I checked to see if there was any bumps on his neck a flee somthing poking him etc.. and there wasn't. The next day I did the same thing and he growled a little and then let me rub his neck. He does this only when his collar's on him, plus it's only been on about a week that he's had his collar, but I take it off when I put him in his crate and don't put it back On until I take him outside and sometimes I leave it off. do I need to leave it on all the time? any suggestions?
Thanks,
Ray

Re: Puppy Question?

Carry where? I only carried my pup to go pee down the stairs of my back deck. Otherwise, he'd pee on the deck cuz it would take too long for him to try and get down them. AND he got some scrapes on his face trying, cuz he'd fall down them. I don't know how old he was when he finally could go up and down them fine, maybe 3.5 months?

I don't know about the collar thing though, maybe still getting used to it.

Re: Puppy Question?

Other than putting the dog where it cannot get by itself, I can see no reason to be carrying one at any age. It is insulting and yes, even pups have and are entitled to a sense of dignity. Human babies have to be carried around as it is a long time before they can navigate on their own. This is not true with dogs that are old enough to leave home.

Learning to be handled is taken care of during your grooming sessions, weekly nail trimming, mouth exams a couple of times a week and general training. There is no reason why a dog (especially one that is going to be large) needs to learn to be carried like a baby. If pup is reluctant to go someplace even with encouragement you can put your finger through the collar and take it there using the dog's four good feet.

Re: Puppy Question?

As pointed out .. the only time the pup should be carried is if he can't get there safely by himself.

I would also carry him in public places like a vets office or anywhere else that has high dog traffic as he does not have an immune system yet and most likely has just begun getting his shots.

When I brought him home the owner told me that he was 7 weeks, but when I called to get the exact date they told me he was born oct 8th, So that means I brought him home at 6weeks.

Re: Puppy Question?

I was reading a post on this site and they said they were going to have to stop carring there dog. I don't carry my dog but I thought since someone said about having to stop carrying there dog I thought that I would ask because I don't carry my dog around with me he can walk just fine. He can hold his own, he knows the sit command and when I SAY OUTSIDE!! he heads straight for the front door to go outside and potty and he is only 7 1/2 weeks. I've had him since he was 6 weeks and I know that they are supposed to be with the mother for at least 7 weeks but he's a big pup and the vett said he's going to be just fine.

Re: Puppy Question?

I never carried any of my puppies....and they still think their lap puppies.
as for the collar...he's probably still getting use to it.I'd keep it on him as much as possible.and disapline him with a STERN "NO" when he growls.
I was teaching my young pup (a number of years ago) to "give" on night when I told him to "give" and he growled...I gave a STERN "NO" and that was the end of that!
never did it again.Just be stern about what is good and what's not.
you'll be fine.He might just be "testing" you.

Re: Puppy Question?

Don't worry about it. Sounds like a great pup in a good home. I'm glad you're not carrying him around. Most people who do that want to think the poor doggy is a human baby and the trouble goes on from there.

Dogs take great pride in getting where they and you want them to go. How very satisfying!

And yet my 8 1/2 month old still won't jump into the back to the car. He runs out to the car, sits behind it and waits for me to lift him in. I can't even get him to place his front paws up there himself.

You might want to check out this thread then: http://www.rottweiler.net/forums/sho...4&page=2&pp=10

Julius is now right around 110 lbs. & I don't think I could heft him into our station wagon. Well I could if I HAD to, but I want him to do it on his own.

Re: Puppy Question?

Well, your questions are already answered. But I'd like to welcome you and your pup. He must be the most precious thing around. Did you mention a name for this guy? If you did I missed it.
