I've
never shaved the whiskers of my Rottweilers for conformation. It was my understanding the Rottweilers were supposed to be shown as they are. And that's the way I do it. I don't know about Dobermans or Shelties, but I was told Rotties were a no trimming breed.
I understand that you want to show affection and bond with your dog. Myself, I tend to find alternative means to accomplish this. You can bond by moments spent by the lake on a beautiful fall day on your walk. I find training to be a farily productive means. I would include grooming, including them on family activities, biking, swimming, boating, a play date, or attending another dogs agility meet amoung other means of accomplishing the same goal.
