calming stuff

I need to give Bastian something to calm him. He has a sore on his foot and we have to leave him with an e-collar on when we're not home. We just did it for the first time when we went grocery shopping (took about 30 minutes round trip). When we got home the floor was soaked with drool. There could be 2 reasons. One, we left a cookie for him and he didn't try to get it. Maybe he was drooling over that, or Two, he was overly anxious about the situation and was losing his mind. We put it on him earlier and played with him, but he is really depressed with it on. It is one of the clear ones so he can see through it, but it is still really scary. I was going to get Rescue Remedy, but it doesn't look like there's anywhere around here that carries it. Any other ideas what I can give him to calm him down?

Re: calming stuff

Are you putting something on the sore that is "soothing?" If it's still itchy and he can't get at it....poor guy...must be going bonkers....I put "Penaten" cream on Toby's sore spots...it's sticky and water repellent and very soothing...takes away itch and pain...It's actually a German Baby Diaper Cream....but has zinc and chamomille in it....just a thought....

You can get Rescue Remedy at Wegman's if you have one in your area. Otherwise try a Health Food Store.

Oh Good Luck with poor Bastian. It can't be easy for him. Sable had a E-collar once for a butt hot spot...looked like she could pull in the Disney channel with that thing!

I did find that the E-collar negated the need for a crate.

Re: calming stuff

We do have some cream from the vet for it that is supposed to help soothe. They make some other don't bite it collars now that are awesome, but unfortunately won't work for feet. They're called bite not collars if you haven't seen them. They're really neat. We're hoping that with this weekend keeping him from licking we can get it to the point that it's not uncomfortable and we can leave a booty on him in the kennel. We'll see!

Re: calming stuff

I found that some dogs handle the basket style muzzle better than the e-collar and it does keep them from bothering sores too much.

Re: calming stuff

I give Bo Mellow Dog biscuits. They are made by Bow Wow Botanicals and I order them on line from Sit Stay.com. They are an herbal anxiety-relief treat that really works for him. It is so much easier to give a treat rather than adding to the problem by giving unpleasant tasting Rescue Remedy.

I've always put the drops right on their favorite treats, so I've never had a problem. But it's nice to know there's a product already out there too.

Oh, I've seen the not bite collars...like a wrap, around the neck. Very neat! I can see where they wouldn't work for feet, tho.

Re: calming stuff

I was going to suggest rescue remedy or other bach essenses, but you would need a wildoats or health food store to get them locally probably. What about comfort zone or feliway(that might not be the right name) they are available at pet stores and supposed to calm but I've never tried either of those.

Re: calming stuff

spraying a lavender mist, or putting a lavender pillow in the room could help
