Elimination ! how many trips per day?

Hi gang...just a quick one,

I like routine,dogs like routine.

I am wondering for a 7 month old pup is routine enough for poop time?

My pooch Buster get a good walk at 7.30 am in the morning where he poops.

Then at 1pm he gets a shorter walk where he also does the (poop) business.

THEN......here is where i am not sure.....

Sometimes he wants a 4pm or a 6pm or a 8pm or even a last night 10pm pooper.

I want order in my house just curious on what everyone else gets upto?

His feed is twice a day 9am and 6pm.

Thx in advance.

Reason for post is i am in dispute with wife cus she expects he goes out for poop as soon as he farts.

Just like people, dogs are all different. Some go once a day. Some go more frequently. You can regulate it to some extent by feeding him at the same times every day, and by feeding a high-quality food (the better the food, the smaller the poops), but other than that, when he's gotta go, he's gotta go.

I agree. Feed at the same time every day and establish a routine.

Normally Squeak will go twice a day (she gets fed twice a day) at the same times everyday. Sometimes she does go a little more often. We are smokers but we do not smoke in the house so we are outside quite often, so she goes outside with us almost all the time. She goes when she has too but for the number 2 she only goes 2 times a day.

If he goes out at 4pm, 6pm, or 10pm, is he POOPING at each of these times??

If he poops when out, then take him out and praise the heck out of him when he goes potty...

If he poops at 7:30, and again at 1:00, and then again any time between 4pm-10pm - is he pooping ALOT?

What are you feeding him? I agree - the better the food, the less poop - garbage in gets you garbage out - and alot of it!

Hubby and family used to feed Pedigree before we added Ben to the house - hubby wanted a better food (and less poop!). We now feed Royal Canin Sensible Choice Natural Blend, and the dogs poop twice a day, like clockwork, after each meal (unless they go before), and it is not alot of poop because the food they eat has little, if any, fillers that they don't digest and therefore poop out.

Re: Elimination ! how many trips per day?

Dog gets EAGLE HOLISTIC 2 cups twice a day with a small amount of olive oil in or plain yogert. Maybe a cracked egg thrown on top every other day as well.

Topped up during the day with a few training snacks and thats it.

He deffo poops big at 7.30am then smaller poop 1pm then evening is tricky sometime 2 small poopers or maybe 3

Maybe he is holding back so as to get more walks?

U think?

Re: Elimination ! how many trips per day?

Dogs normally poop the same number of times that they eat.

Although a reasonable schedule is very helpful in housebreaking, after that has been established, I do not believe that having a rigid schedule does the dog a favor. It does not allow for flexibility that activities demand, traveling, training nights etc.

My dog is a twice a day eater/pooper too. But if you factor in new activities and exiting outings they may be stimulated to go again (just like humans).

Merlin is a twice day pooper. Harley is only a once a day pooper even though they both are feed twice a day. Unless somthing strange comes up (bad treats, stressful training class) they stick to their schedules very nicely.

Re: Elimination ! how many trips per day?

Parker still eats 3 times a day. He typically poops once a day. Unless we've been outside working extensively - then the added activity / excitement may cause additional poops.

You can: Feed fewer times a day (but I personally prefer not feeding less than twice a day. It helps them not to be SO hungry because their feedings are so far apart.)
You can: Feed a high quality diet. Less fillers means less quantity to poop.

In the end (no pun intended ) if the dog's gotta go, he's going to go!
