Talking "Webbed Harness"

Hi all,

I need to pick up a 1" Webbed Harness for my tracking seminar tomorrow.

What exactly is a webbed harness? I'm aware that there are many different types of harnesses - but I don't know the names of them. Can you post a link to one so I can see what it is?

Thanks!

Re: "Webbed Harness"

Well, I think they are referring to a nylon webbing as opposed leather harness, however I don't think you can simply "pick up" a non-restrictive tracking harness of the size you will need. That could be a problem. Take a flat collar along if you can't find a tracking harness. (perhaps you can borrow one) My dogs always started out on a flat collar and it should suffice for a seminar.

I currently use a martingale on the dead ring when I work him in SAR. I was just going to do that. But they specifically asked that I get this particular harness.

We're only just getting into these sports / tasks. I don't want to sink a bunch of money into something before we even know if we like doing it. Additionally, I don't want to pick up something poorly fitting that will bother him 'just to get us through'. Ya know? I'd much prefer to find that I enjoy it and then outfit Parker appropriately.

Thanks Judi!

Re: "Webbed Harness"

Premier makes nice harnesses that are sold at most pet stores. They have a ring over the back for attachment of the leash. On the Premier harnesses, the place where the ring is located, is sewn in place to where the side straps attach. This disallows movement of the ring while the dog is tracking, which creates less line interferance from you. I got one at my local store for $25

Re: "Webbed Harness"

Well, dang I stand corrected. Is it a pulling harness or non-restrictive? The ones I've seen at the pet stores all had breast collars that wrap around the shoulders.

Re: "Webbed Harness"

So am I looking for a figure 8 type? I have his Ruff Riders Roadie - but I can't take the short leash off. I didn't think it was appropriate.

Re: "Webbed Harness"

If you're still standing, it probably wasn't a great correction!

The ones that I bought are nylon mesh, they have one section that slips on over the head. Behind the neck it comes together as the one piece that runs down the spine, and the ring is at the end of that. Coming out from each side of the ring are the clips for the side straps. When viewed from the front, it looks like a V over the dog's sternum. There is one piece that runs under the dog's ribs, and then has the side straps that come up. HOrrible description......looks like yer typical tracking harness, it is non-restrictive and was recommended by a tracking judge b/c of the fact that the ring is sewn in place, vs. movable.

Re: "Webbed Harness"

Dang that had me laughing!!!! I don't go down easily........

That sounds like exactly what she needs! What a find that would be. Guess I'll have to start keeping my eye out so I can make referrals. I don't pay as much as attention I guess because I can dig out about every piece of equipment in every size from my dog cabinet. Maybe I'll just stroll the aisles next time and take a better look around.

Re: "Webbed Harness"

Can't tell exactly Trish because I can't see the top back. Where those side pieces come in over the ribs and attach to the piece running over the spine.............some of them are slidable at that point (where the ring is), some aren't. You want a non-slidable one.

Re: "Webbed Harness"

HEre's a picture of one. You can see that where the ring is attached, there is a small piece that comes down on either side, with a clip, and then the side piece attaches to the clip. THis way, the ring doesn't slide around on the dog's back.

Re: "Webbed Harness"

IF you need to get a harness fast, go to your local pet store and get a harness there. The one that everyone walks their little fluffies on, is the one you want. I has a D ring on the back. They usually only have one release on the one side of the belly strap.
Once you start tracking you can get a better fitting one. If he really pulls, perhaps one with padded shoulders. Most tracking harnesses have adjustments on both the shoulder straps and the belly straps with releases on both sides of the belly strap so you don't need to lift legs into "holes".

Re: "Webbed Harness"

Trish, I'm sure you know about these guys...

http://k9toolbox.com/harnesses/index.html

They made a great agitation harness for TJ, and the make a tracking harness as well. You won't get it for tomorrow, but if you get into the sport, it's something to check out..

Re: "Webbed Harness"

We got both our tracking harnesses at the local Petsmart, Guerins looks like the pic Gretchen posted, Steven's has a loop that goes over his head and a strap that wraps around his middle with one closure. Neither slides around or restricts the dog, both have D-rings in the middle of the back and they both cost under 17 dollars!
