Book recommendations

Hello,

I'm looking to adopt an adult rottweiler at some point in the future and I'm trying to learn as much as I can beforehand. I'd appreciate any book recommnedations people have.

I have Training your Rottweiler and I am going to order The Ultimate Rottweiler. I was also going to get Culture Clash and How to be your Dog's Best Friend but the reviews are very widespread on those so I don't know if they are good resources or not. Any opinions on those or suggestions for what would be good reads to help when I do finally adopt an adult?

Thanks!

Re: Book recommendations

I love "Bones Would Rain from the Sky" by Suzanne Clothier. Wonderful read & although it is not about Rottweilers it is about dogs in general. Lovely book.

Re: Book recommendations

I have all of the following books:

Culture Clash by Jean Donaldson
Idiots Guide To Rottweilers
Rottweilers for Dummies
Leader of the Pack (I forget the authors)
Good Dogs, Bad Habits
Bones Would Rain From The Sky (just got this last night and cannot WAIT to get started reading it!)

I am also in the middle of re-reading 'Beyond Basic Dog Training" by Diane Bauman as part of the recommended reading for my Competition Obedience class. I've also applied some of the stuff to the Beginner class I am teaching.

I would also recommend volunteering with a rottweiler rescue or attending shows and talking to breeders - and of course, read rottweiler.net! No better place to learn about the breed!

I agree. There is a wonderful search engine here that will answer just about every possible question.

And Culture Clash is like a religious experience. Once you read it you will never think about dog behavior in quite the same way.

Happy reading!

Also you might want to check out this website:

http://flyingdogpress.com/

It has a lot of Suzanne Clothier's articles. Just click on the "articles" link. Wonderful stuff! If you can't tell, I love her!

Re: Book recommendations

I am also researching getting my first Rottie. I started looking into it a few months ago and have gone back into the archives and read almost every post. I ordered Rottweilers for Dummies from online and will be getting Culture Clash next. Unfortunatley my local library had nothing to do with Rotties and most of their dog books were for Children and not very informative. My husband is now reading my Rottweilers for Dummies and I am thrilled to say we are now 100% in agreement that this is the breed we want in our home and we know we will put 100% effort into training and raising our Rottie properly, and responsibley. I got many wonderfully responses several weeks ago when I asked this question in Chit Chat, befor I learned to navigate the archives.

Good luck in your search for knowledge on this fantastic breed and keep surfing Rottweiler.net it is VERY informative.

Re: Book recommendations

I would also highly recommend Cathy Thompson and Linda Michael's book Centuries of Service. This is not a how-to book nor a vanity book of famous dogs. It is a book that gives you the heart of the Rottweiler, who and what they are. Without that knowlege and understanding and committment, one should not own the breed.

Re: Book recommendations

Thanks for all the suggestions, I am starting to learn how to navigate this forum thing and how to search the archives so that is a great resource.

I'm excited to make it to a bookstore(nearest bookstore is 2.5 hours away I think) and see what ones I can get then will order the rest on-line. I can't wait to get more reading in

I wish I could volunteer with a rescue but the nearest rotty rescue is 5.5 hours away , I am going to have to check out shows if I can find any somwhere nearby.
