Calling Animal Control

Have you ever called Animal Control? What was the situation and why did you call?

Have you been in a situation / witnessed a situation where you should have called Animal Control and didn't? Why?

Have you ever been bitten / attacked / threatened by a dog (any size) and did or did you not call? Why?

There is a woman in my neighbourhood who walks her two border collie mixes off leash. It drives me crazy. They approach all dogs, tails up, slow approach and surround them. You can feel the tension in the air. There has never been an altercation, but I resent the fact that I have to hold my breath until they go away.

I've decided that the next time I see them, I'm calling animal control. It isn't fair that they get to harrass the other dogs in the neighbourhood. I have the right to enjoy my neighbourhood and they don't have the right to infringe on those rights - regardless if there's been an injury or not.

Re: Calling Animal Control

Why wait? If there's a leash law and this upsets you that much, call them.

Re: Calling Animal Control

I haven't seen them for a while and I don't know where they live - not much use. It's not like an animal control officer is going to stand on my street corner and wait for them.

Oh - and yes - I spoke to her before. A simple "You really should have your dogs on leash." and her response was, "Oh, they don't go far." As if my concern was that her dogs would run away. I've heard others talk to her before as well - she's very dismissive about the whole thing.

Until I know where she lives or what her schedule is (it seems to change constantly) it would be impossible for me to give AC any information to help them contact / warn / fine this woman.

Re: Calling Animal Control

There are leash laws for a reason. I see no reason you should have to put up with dogs off-lead unless you choose to (by going to an off-lead dog park). Have you asked the woman about it? Personally, I might talk to her about it directly before calling animal control, but there's certainly no reason not to call them if you choose not to speak to her.

I've called the humane society on people twice, both for animal abuse/neglect reasons. I've called animal control once, to pick up a dog allowed to roam freely in the middle of winter (an elderly Beagle who ended up in our back yard mooching after my Springer who was in season), and the animal control officers knew the dog by name, which is a pretty good indication that our call wasn't the first about this dog.

Re: Calling Animal Control

I've never had occasion to call Animal Control. It sounds like these Border Collie's are circling your dog as a herding instict.

I think you have a right to walk your dog in peace, and not have to worry about being approached by unleashed dogs.

Re: Calling Animal Control

If someone was breaking the law I would call the police and have the person ticketed. I get pissed when dogs of leash coming running up to us (usually small dogs that love to jump in Bella's face). I would call Animal Control in the case of an attack or similar incident (never have had the need to call them)

I agree about the herding thing. There is an aussie I met at the beach who would fix on a dog chasing the ball and crouch down like he was in stealth bomber mode. He then proceeded to run up behind the other dog and stop about a foot behind them waiting for them to take off again...

Re: Calling Animal Control

Take photos. A video is better. If the camera has a time and day stamp, use it.

Then call animal control and present your evidence.

Case closed.

If there is a dept. of animal control then they are the ones who have jurisdiction over animal regulations. The police don't usually even know what penal codes exist in these areas.

However, calling animal control for something like a dog off leash unfortunately isn't going to get you very far. Most likely an officer won't be dispatched immediately therefore the dogs and owner would be done, but if you do find where they live and are persistant about it you may have some luck...

Re: Calling Animal Control

Unfortunately I have had to call Animal Control as welll. One of my neighbors was constantly leaving her dobie outside during the summer with no shelter or water sometimes for entire weekends while she went on a trip I spent countless hours checking on the dog and ensuring she had water. Eventually they seized the dog on cruelty charges.

You might be saving yourself, your dog or someone else from injury by reporting her behavior to the proper authorities

Re: Calling Animal Control

I have called animal control in the past a couple times. The most recent was when the neighbors dog was chasing my filly last year. The problem was taken care of very quickly. I have to admit I did feel bad about how it ended (they surrendered their dog) but I could not have this dog coming over and chasing my horses and hurting them or worse I spoke to the neighbors first and gave them an opportunity to correct the problem. When the dog came back the next day, animal control was called.

If you are having a problem with this lady and her dog then by all means call them and report her. I agree that it is harder to do if you don't know where she lives or her schedule, but maybe they have had other complaints and will know of who you are referring. Be sure and make it clear to them that you felt threatened by these dogs, that should guarantee a much quicker response.

GOOD LUCK! I hope that you are able to get this situation resolved so you can enjoy your neighbrohood with your boy in peace.

Re: Calling Animal Control

Have you ever expressed your concern to her of this?? She does this on normal regular sidewalks? I'm sure if you expressed your concern nicely, she'd at least leash them when she sees you.

In your situation, I would definately make the call. Most neighborhoods have leash laws. This woman obviously does not understand her dogs are intimidating other dogs.

Yes, I have called Animal control. I leash my animals and I expect the same of others. The Rotties are unaltered as I show them. I have a kennel. I use it as a play yard and they can relieve themselves. I am ALWAYS out there with them. On occasion, like late at night or inclement weather, I like to use the dog run for bathroom breaks. I can stand on the porch and watch.

A number of times, we've had this butt ugly unaltered male shepherd mix, on the loose. Now, as I said I'm always there. But I shouldn't have to chase this beast away. (looks diseased anyway!) It's not just during the dogs cycle...it was frequent ...like 2-3 times a week.

Animal control was very understanding and accomodating. Last time that particular dog was loose, was 6 months ago.

I've never witnessed a situation where I have not called, nor have I been bitten in MANY years. It was a Chihauhau, and it was reported.

Wink Re: Calling Animal Control

We have only called animal control once and that was a few years ago.

We went to a pet shop on the mall to look around and I saw a sick german shepherd pup that was vomitting a clear fluid then having dry heaves, he had a green mucus coming from his nose and when he laid down his whole body would twitch and shake. I knew others in the past had called animal control on the pet shop and when we called them they did go out there and the shepherd was gone the next day.

The pet shop moved within months after that incident.

Re: Calling Animal Control

We have called Animal Control a couple of times. I carry my cell phone with me when I go for walks with Jules & I have Animal Control programmed in just in case.

We've called twice about a chocolate lab in the neighborhood. The first time that we were confronted with this dog (who is an intact male, as is Jules) he was very aggressive towards Julius & we thought he was going to attack him. Luckily Ryan was there & he got the dog while Jules & I hightailed it down the block. He then proceeded to tell the dogs owner what the dog had attempted to do & to please keep her dog contained or on a leash.

This same dog had tried to start something with Julius again on two other occasions. We called AC both times. It's not enough just to avoid the block where this dog lives...because she lets him roam. I will not put up with feeling unsafe walking Julius. Period. Plus, I think that leash laws should be enforced for all dogs!

Re: Calling Animal Control

I have called Animal Control 3 times. Once because a mangy shepherd kept coming over to poop in my fenced yard...darn thing jumped my fence! Talked to the owners and basically got told to P*** O** so caught the dog and had animal control take it. The dog now stays at home because they not only got a fine but it had no license or rabies tag so that had to be paid for before dog was released. 2nd and 3rd times my dogs were attacked by off leash dogs in the neighbourhood. Both times the comments were that it was my fault for walking my leashed rottweilers on a public road. Didn't go over to well with the animal control officer as he has a rottweiler and a pit bull himself. One neighbour has since moved away as his loose dog bit a lady jogging and his dog is now declared a dangerous animal.(apparently if you move to a different municipality that dangerous dog title doesn't go with the dog???) The other neighbours dog was PTS as it attacked 2 more dogs in the neighbourhood.

I wouldn't put up with any loose dogs anymore. Just find out where they live and report them. I also carry a cattle prod when I take the dogs for a walk now...I am not putting up with dogs getting into my rotties face anymore.
