| Breed banning on homeowner's insurance I got this foolish idea to check around for a friend to see I could find her a better rate on her homeowner's insurance. MISTAKE! Every company I called said they would not cover a Rottweiler. They are also not covering Pit Bulls, Akita's, Chow's, haven't gotten anymore added to the list yet. But what about these people that own these breeds how are they suppose to get coverage? I really think this stinks!!! I know their are mean rottweilers and other kinds of dogs out there but how about the people that own the nice ones, they get knocked around for this. I'm still going to try and find a company to help this friend out, but my chances are getting slimmer and slimmer. |

| Re: Breed banning on homeowner's insurance Never had a problem with State Farm...if you look at the AKC site and put "insurance" in the search box, it should give you Rottie-friendly insurance companies. |

| Re: Breed banning on homeowner's insurance The info on the AKC site isn't necessarily so...some of those companies, in some areas, do have breed bans. I had a heck of a time here in CA, in the aftermath of the killing of Diane Whipple by PC's, finding homeowners insurance that would insure a Rott and a Pit Bull. I found one Farmers agent that would take on my dogs AND my shake roof. Call around. Call different agents working for the same company. Talk to your obedience trainer, your vet, your local breed club, if you have one. More than likely there is SOMEONE. The policies of each individual office are dictated by the franchise owner, NOT the company itself. Find someone that is a "dog person."

| Re: Breed banning on homeowner's insurance I have tried Farmer's and State Farm and the answer was NO. Also the USAA will not cover because the spouse is not retired from the service, but did his tour of duty, guess that doesn't count either. Still looking and let my fingers do the walking in the phone book. Thanks anyway |

| Re: Breed banning on homeowner's insurance Insurance coverages depend on several things: 1 - The insurance company itself can set limits on what it will allow to be covered. 2 - The state in which you live can also regulate what must be covered and what can be excluded from insurance coverage. 3 - Individual insurance agents can refuse coverage for what they may percieve as an unacceptable risk. That said, if you have what some might call a high risk, such as a dog of a certain breed, you will need to do a lot of searching to find a company that will sell you insurance. While a certain insurance company may not ban breeds, you may have to contact more than one agent before you find one that will sell you the insurance. And you may wind up making many calls to many companies before you find coverage. If you deal with an independant insurance agent who can broker insurance with many different companies, they will do the leg-work for you to find a company that will cover you. I've always gotten my insurace through an independant agency and I've never had any trouble getting insurance - even though NY does allow companies to refuse insurance due to dog breeds.

| Re: Breed banning on homeowner's insurance Sorry but he isn't in the reserves. I didn't have any luck today, got all NO's. I'll just keep trying. I have another question though. Suppose you have your dog in your car with the windows down enough for the dog to be comfortable and someone comes and puts their hands in the car to pet it and gets bit. Would your auto insurance cover that or is it the other person fault? |

| Re: Breed banning on homeowner's insurance well the way society is today most likely it will be your fualt for haveing the dog in your car to begin with...but the way i see it that person entered the car without permission there for is at fualt! now how the insurance sees it will more than likely depend on the police reports findings wether the cop likes the breed or is a devoted hater of the breed.

| Re: Breed banning on homeowner's insurance SAFECO covers any breed dog, but you will need to cover both your auto and home with them (requirement of the company for multiple policy). Their standards are high. You need to have a pretty good record to qualify for insurance with them (as per my ins. rep.) |
