Re: Wake up Call - Are you failing your dog?

Bryanna, socialize your pup now with as many people as you can. Praise her for all the good she does. Socialize her with other dogs, and do the same. I read somewhere to get introduce your pup to 100 new things for 100 days. Don't pamper your pup. Having rules is what rotties need. Take your pup for training.

Not to step on any toes here, but for the average owner it is so very easy to miss certain signals. Chewie is my 2nd rottie and came to us almost a year ago. I had never had a young rottie and was not really prepared for him. Anyways, we thought we were handling him well right up till the time he lunged at a stranger on the street. Had we not been in the middle of training him to heel, he would have connected with this guys arm, but the leash was short and we caught him. Since then we have had him assessed and have learned to read him and any other dog for aggression. I even went to a 2 day seminar on dog aggression just so "I" would feel more comfortable.
Most people just think that if you feed them and house them they should be fine. I know that is soooo not true.
Hope your wounds are healing and you are recovering

I know what you mean. A couple of years ago I had adopted a female rott from a rescue. We were looking to adopt another dog, and a neighbor had a son with a male papered rott that he really wasn't able to take care of. They brought the dog to visit, and meet our girl. He was a nice dog, but had resource issues. At the time, I didn't know how to handle him, and felt that since I would be the one training him, and be with him more than my husband (who fell in love with him), I didn't feel comfortable enough to take him in. Now, after doing extensive reading, and training, I would take that dog. I have 5 dogs now, 4 of them females (one is a friend's that I am fostering). I still have so much to learn, but my dogs are not only living with me, they are my world.
