Most people just think that if you feed them and house them they should be fine.

I know what you mean. A couple of years ago I had adopted a female rott from a rescue. We were looking to adopt another dog, and a neighbor had a son with a male papered rott that he really wasn't able to take care of. They brought the dog to visit, and meet our girl. He was a nice dog, but had resource issues. At the time, I didn't know how to handle him, and felt that since I would be the one training him, and be with him more than my husband (who fell in love with him), I didn't feel comfortable enough to take him in. Now, after doing extensive reading, and training, I would take that dog. I have 5 dogs now, 4 of them females (one is a friend's that I am fostering). I still have so much to learn, but my dogs are not only living with me, they are my world.
