What size wire crate for travel is preferred?

I have one that's 35" deep but I'm wondering if I should get the 42" deep one. Rocky is a medium/large boy...25.5" tall and about 105 pounds. The width and heighth of the crate is fine. I'm going to be travelling more with him this year and I was curious what other people use. This would be mostly for travelling...in the vehicles and/or in the hotels. Thanks in advance.

Although I have one of the really large crates, I would never use it for travel. I have it only for extended crating at home. (hasn't been unfolded in years). For travel, you want a crate that easily fits in your vehicle, can be carried without using a hand truck and that the dog will fit in. It doesn't need to be large enough for a play pen. Just to curl up and sleep. Remember it is going to be carried a lot, and the room it takes when set up or in the vehicle.

Judi is right and you really don't want one too big bc you don't want them bouncing around bc it's too big. I have to measure Czar's, I know it folds up easily and is just big enough for him to stretch out and even turn around in. He has a real unique way of doing that . We couldn't get one too wide bc it fits in that back of our extended cab pickup truck but he's traveled comfortably in it everytime we take him for a ride or on a trip. He weighs 115.

So you think the 35" deep models are plenty roomy enough?

Re: What size wire crate for travel is preferred?

Rocco is the same size as Rocky and he couldn't stand up (without ducking his head) in a 36" crate. I ordered one in hopes of using it for shows and it just wasn't big enough for him. Yes, he could have curled up and slept in it (if he curled up) but couldn't stand in it. It does fit Perle, however, at 23" and 84 pounds so it wasn't a total loss. Rocco travels harnassed in the back seat of my car so that wasn't an issue for me. I have a really small car and 36" was the biggest that would fit in my trunk.

O.K I just measured Czar's and it's 42". Without seeing your boy it's hard to tell if it's long enough for him. I know I could not have gone smaller for Czar . As long as he can lay down comfortably and turn around.

The crate I have is plenty TALL enough for him. He always lays down in it anyway. I'm just wondering about the depth (length).

Re: What size wire crate for travel is preferred?

Rocco must have a long neck. 36" was deep enough for him to lay down if he didn't stretch out and kept the legs tucked in but he could not turn around comfortably in it. I might also mention that he hasn't been crated in about a year so I'm sure that contributed to his (and mine) uncomfortableness (is that a word?) with the size. Although, still, he was unable to fully stand.

Re: What size wire crate for travel is preferred?

Hi skip,

My large girl weighs 100lbs and she's 27 inches tall. I use a wire crate at home it's 36H x 30W x 48L.

I travel with an enclosed crate because I have a pickup truck. I didn't want her getting wet and since we go on the highway a lot I didn't want any road debris hitting her if she was in a wire crate. The dimensions on the Pet Porter are 34H x 29W x 47L.

Just to go you an idea. Have fun picking a crate the choices are way too many for me.
