Collars that fit?

Where can I find a collar that will fit Briodie's 28" + neck? I've been looking around and can't find anything to fit him. I'd prefer nylon with a plastic buckle since his last collar had a chrome plated buckle that somehow got sharp and put little pieces of chrome under his skin leading to a reaction, infection, and a vet visit so I think I'll try and avoid that this time.

I would check around on the internet to see if you can find a place that will custom make a collar or you can look for one you can add links to. You could probably go to your local hardware store and buy the chain and rings to make a training collar yourself, as well.

Check out those links. I just did a Google search & I found tons but most of them are with the metal buckle! I posted a thread about possibly getting Julius a collar with a plastic buckle & asked everyone for their opinions & have now decided NOT to get a plastic buckle. Just not sturdy enough for Jules. Re: Collars that fit?

Thanks folks. I'd prefer a metal buckle as well since Brodie weighs in at over 125lbs. However, I'd also like to avoid a repeat of the whole neck infection deal, so it looks like plastic, unless I can find something in stainless.

I'm giving serious thought to making a custom collar for him. Something that could stand up to him and would fit. I'm sure I'm not alone in this dilemma.

You might want to check into people who work in leather (making buckles, handbags, etc.). We have quite a few people in town who do leather work & are more than happy to custom make a collar/leash for a dog owner. You can specify what type of buckle, leather, etc. is used. It's pricey but if you're looking for a specific thing it might be worth it for you.

Re: Collars that fit?

Collars that size are easily available. Most pet stores stock them. After all those saints and pyrs and neufs all wear collars. I have seen them.

If it is a buckle collar, measure the dog's neck, add about 3 inches and then go shop. Someone gave me some a few years ago and they were that size or more. Not the kind of collar I use so I passed them on, but they were simple nylon buckle collars.

Re: Collars that fit?

I personally, after seeing a couple of the plastic buckle collars snap because the plastic was brittle and the dog was strong, would never ever trust one. I agree that finding a quality metal buckle is a much better idea.

Re: Collars that fit?

If your boy isn't properly trained a plastic buckle will snap like a twig!! Harley was only 75# when I got her. The shelter gave me a nylon collar with a plastic buckle, it did not survive the first encounter with another dog, thank god the other dog (pittie) was behind a chain link fence. I use leather with a metal collar (which I've always used and should have been using all along) I think the sliver from your old collar was a very rare occurrence but if your concerned don't leave his collar on 24/7 and give it once over every so often to avoid a repeat.

They'll make whatever you want, basically.
