when does doggy start eating treats???

Hi gang,my rotty "Buster is fed 3 times a day at 6 hour intervals.

He is 8 and 1/2 weeks old and weighed 6.5 kilos at vets 2 days ago when he got 1st jabs.(is this ok weight ?).

Anyway back to topic

When we are in training he aint to fussed at any of my treats and never begs or hassles when food is around.

Also he is pretty cool when i put his food bowl down eats every drop though.

So question is ......when is he gonna get loco over scooby snacks and treats ????

Thanks in advance again o wise ones

Re: when does doggy start eating treats???

Firstly..it sounds like he is a good weight for his age

Secondly...not all puppies are food motivated and you may have to try several different treats before you find the one that really turns him on. If he just isn't motivated by food, you may find he will train or work for a favorite toy and lots of praise. Remember to keep his training very basic and very short in length and make it fun.

Too many people try to train too hard with very young puppies...basically he needs play and socialization and lots of nap times as this very young age. Building a respectful, loving bond with him is all important and the first step in future training. Have fun with your new puppy

Also remember not to punish, but instead to re-direct him to SHOW him what you want from him..he's looking for a leader he can trust and depend on.

I agree!
There are other ways than treats to tell a pup he is doing fine, being sooooooooo smart and you are pleased with his behaviour. A pat, a toy and a happy "good boy"

Be patient with training and your expectations!
Concentrate on potty training and SOCIALISATION. In a few weeks you will have to deal with chewing, biting, humping etc. all normal puppy behaviour. Then start to teach him manners and later it’s time to teach him obedience.

Good luck with you pup!!!

Re: when does doggy start eating treats???

Thanks .

BTW he is already chew crazy :) i got him some great chew toys and when he starts gnawing at my coffee table i just say Buster OFF and redirect him to a chew toy.

This seems to work.(well mostly).

Little devil work me up for a toilet run at 3am this morning .I cant wait for that to grow out of him.

Thx again.

Re: when does doggy start eating treats???

Some wise answers, here. Puppies are very playful. Learning should be simple and fun. Sessions should be rather brief. Praise often works better at this age. Toys are also a good option. You could make more interesting treats, but... If you decided to make homemade treats, for example...the pup can get "too excited" and learning is out the window there as well.

Enjoy your pup! WOW! This IS a young'un, isn't he?

You know this may sound weird but I kinda miss the 3am wake up call?? LOL it seems like so long ago that Squeak was waking me up to take her outside. Now she sleeps through the night and is fine until I am ready to take her out when i get up (which is only about 5 minutes after waking up) so not like she is waiting a lifetime.

Enjoy the small puppyhood while you can!! LOL. Squeak will be 6 months old on July 3, she is definately still a puppy, but she is growing so fast in so many ways.

Have fun with your pup and keep us updated!!

Re: when does doggy start eating treats???

I think I remember someone sayin on here (or I read elsewhere), that thier palates change as they grow. SO treats may not be that enticing to them now, but your pup may soon become keen to them. Vegas wasn't crazy for them the first while, now when he hears a bag rustle, he thinks its treats.
