Stick lodged in teeth

Hey there again everyone............

Well this morning started out like any other, I woke up had a shower, fed Dante, made my lunch, put Dante out, and was eating breakfast when I noticed Dante acting really wierd outside. He was running around and kept "yawning" he was rolling and biting the air.

This scared me, I thought he was choking or something, I opened the door and held him trying to look in his mouth, he was jumping on my still biting the air. I could not see anything in his mouth. I got more scared when I saw that he was drouling alot.

My wife was at work (vet clinic) so I called her and told her I would be right down with Dante.

To make a long story short, I thought Dante would die in my car, I was scared. We arrive at the clinic and they bring him right in, lay him down and open his mouth. Well turns out he was chewing a stick and it broke perfectly and got stuck up in his upper jaw from teeth across to teeth. So they removed it and he was fine. I am telling you I thought he was choking to death, but it turns out he was just trying to get the stick out of his mouth.
I felt kinda silly, but am so glad things turned out.

I really wish dogs could talk.

Re: Not a Good Morning

It's always something isn't it, and yes it sure would be nice if they could talk but only sometimes, lol, bc I think we'd be surprised at what they'd say if they could talk .

Don't feel silly for taking your dog to the vet, you did the right thing and my first thought as you were describing his behavior was that perhaps he got stung by a bee. My dad's boxer got stung last year and my dad didn't know what happened, all he saw was his face instantly swell to the point his face was disfigured. He called me, I told him to give Benedryl and still take him to the vet in case he had an allegic reaction. All turned out well, he did the right thing and had to continue the Benedryl that night.

I'm very glad Dante is o.k and it was nothing serious. Those darn sticks can be quite dangerous at times. It's funny bc where you live it's morning and where I live it's 11:30 at night . Take care.

Re: Not a Good Morning

Absolutely! Looking like a fool doesn't bother me one little bit especially when it comes to my Fluffernutter!

Even though I have a 6 foot locked privacy fence I still have to patrol my yard daily because of the darn seagulls! They drop all manner of debris in the yard including chicken bones!

Re: Not a Good Morning

Glad to hear that Dante's OK. It always amazes me the things that can happen to an animal (or a human for that fact) that you just never expect. You can do everything you can think of to protect them but they almost always find a way to get into trouble.

Re: Not a Good Morning

Hey, it is never foolish when you don't know what is happening!!! The exact same thing happened to me!!! My parents Great Dane was doing the same thing one day. I thought he was choking too. I grabed the dog and put my hand down his throat (165 pd dog here ) but could find nothing. I put him in the car and raced to the emergency vet's office. This happened late on a Sunday night. They ran him into the exam room while I waited on pins and needles outside The vet came out smiling with a stick in his hand, it had broken off and lodged between his teeth just like yours!!! He had to cut the stick in half in order to get it out. We were all just glad it was something simple!!!! and I am glads yours was too!!!!!

Re: Not a Good Morning

Coming from someone who has watched her 3 month old puppy choke and stop breathing (luckily chest compressions on the way to the vet saved her life) I can totally understand your panic/worry. Almost 2 years later I watch her like a hawk (as I do all the dogs) and worry just a bit more than I probably need to. We now have a 3 month old GSD and when he's got a stick or stone I worry and take it away (no fun for him).

Glad Dante's okay...

Re: Not a Good Morning

The stick incident happened to me once when Rocco was much younger. Luckily, I was able to clearly see the stick in his mouth and removed it. It is scary! I have to watch him like a hawk because EVERYTHING goes in his mouth!

I am glad to hear that I am not the only one this has happened to.

Re: Not a Good Morning

Been there, done that. The exact same thing happened to Spike. Drooling, pawing at his face, weird air-snapping. I saw the stick but couldn't get a grip on it because he was drooling so much. Got him to the vet's and they gave me a hemostat and I plucked it right out. (yes, I did. This was early on in his tenure with us and he had given the vet a really hard time, so she was more than happy to let me do it. He's much better now!)
